About The Winemaker's Private Wine Tours
Don’s wines have been awarded two trophies and many gold medals in competitions both in New Zealand and international venues. Don has a son (fourth generation) making wine in Germany. It is Don’s deep passion for wine that encourages him to share his knowledge of viticulture, winemaking and wine appreciation with others. Don has formed close relationships with the wineries, ensuring that his guests receive special attention and tasting upgrades. The tours are always hosted by Don as he does not believe in hiring drivers.

β β β β β What an amazing day from start to finish! Don was a fantastic guide and teacher for our Hawke's Bay wine tour. This is the first time I've really been able to appreciate the whole process in a wine tasting tour. Don had so much knowledge to impart to us and never made us feel like any question wasn't worthwhile. We tried wines at many different wineries and he adapted the tour to our tastes (despite those being quite different!). The trip to Te Mata Peak at the end of the day, treated to a homemade wine with fantastic views, was the cherry on top! A New Zealand experience to never forget! What a lovely guide with a really interesting story to tell - couldn't recommend enough! Go raibh maith agat!! AoidΓn

Don was an outstanding guide. Right from the start he listened to our preferences and tailored a day that we will never forget. Not just his passion and knowledge of wine but his pride in the region and willingness to share the history and beauty of the Bay made our visit perfect.
We will return and look forward to spending more time with Don.

β β β β β Our second tour with Don and we're extremely glad to have taken the opportunity. A full day of information sharing and insights into wine in general, the processes and challenges behind getting the wine to the many markets and preferences, meeting local vintners and tasting both the wines and hospitality of the region. This is a superb learning experience but it's also a joy to be in the hands of a master winemaker with such a great sense of humour! Thanks Don.

My wife and I were in the Hawkes Bay for a few days to explore some of the wineries. We found this tour online and booked quickly as it looked so good.
Don delivered! He had picked some great wineries and a great lunch too! Don took us through some wine tasting skills and explained lots about wine production and the history of wine making in the area. An exceptional breadth of knowledge and obviously very passionate about wine and wine making. We learnt so much!
With his relationships with the wineries he was even able to get us tastings of wines we would have missed out if we weren't with him.
If you are visiting this beautiful part of Aotearoa and love your wine, this tour is a must!

β β β β β We booked a private wine tour with The Winemakers Private Wine Tour August 2020. We gave Don a brief of what we were interested in and he delivered. I myself have been on wind tours in the USA, Australia and here in NZ. This was by far the best tour we have ever been on. Don is a third generation wind maker and has a genuine passion for wine making. The knowledge he has is fantastic. We visited some of the off the beaten track wineryβs that has some excellent wines to offer at very good prices. We finished the day with a glass of Don very our port on our way back to the hotel. I would highly recommend if you want a genuine experience give Don and his wife a call. We will be back in the new year and will be using Don services again.

β β β β β Fantastic tour with Don! He is so friendly and willing to share his vast knowledge about wine. This personal tour saw us visiting a wide variety of wineries that had lots of different things to offer. Then finished off a lovely day with a trip to the top of Te Mata peak where we were treated to Donβs own homemade wine. Will definitely be booking again with him next time I have visitors in town

Don is a fantastic guide with an amazing amount of experience. He offered a tailored trip to us that far exceeded our expectations.
We leave with a whole new host of knowledge about wine and the Hawkes Bay area in general.

β β β β β I have been on many wine tours over the years but this one was far and away the the best. Don was an absolute pleasure to spend the day with and his many years of experience as a winemaker really bring another dimension to the tour.
He checks what your preferences are before providing you with a suggested itinerary. He local knowledge is amazing and he is obviously well known in the area.
Having a private tour was a great experience, and every winery we visited was very attentive and had some great stories (and wines) to share with us.
We finished the day with a drive up Te Mata peak with Don where we were treated to a glass of his 10 year old port which was the perfect ending to the day. We could not recommend Don and his wine tour enough!
