β β β β β I have been out to see Bill at W.T. Audio twice now. He is a genuinely friendly and helpful gentleman who provides great service. The store is packed with a huge range of vintage equipment, most of which you will not find on TradeMe or other sites. Bill is 70 years old and therefore does not sell online but that isn't the best way to buy vintage audio equipment anyway.
Bill is very helpful and will set up and test the equipment in-store for you to listen to. If you are out of town, give him a call and he will be able to walk you through his stock and give genuine descriptions as to quality and sound. The store has been around for 28 years which is a testament to the good business principles that he is well known for locally.
I was surprised to read one review stating that his equipment is overpriced. This is as far from my experiences that you can get. I bought a beautiful pair of Mission M73 speakers for an amazing price and will be going back regularly. If you look at vintage audio amps as "old stuff" and expect to pick a decent unit up for $20, then you will be disappointed wherever you go.
Buying vintage audio online (particularly from overseas) is a gamble in and of itself. You never know what condition the equipment is in or whether the sound signature matches your individual preferences. Buying from overseas incurs huge shipping costs and the shipping process can damage the equipment if it is dropped or manhandled. Also, be aware that different countries use different plugs and voltages. In NZ we use 230/240V but other places such as the U.S. use 110V. If you plug that into a NZ outlet it will blow! A UK plug can easily be remedied by a plug adapter.
If you are looking for any quality audio equipment (And a lot of vintage gear is better quality than modern receivers), then I highly recommend you give Bill a call or pop into his store.

β β β β β Bill's got the knowledge to go with his galaxy of top-end audio gear. He may even steer you away from some stock to something that may more match your needs. Needless to say that with his advice all the systems Ive strapped together have sounded fantastic. He makes a mean coffee too. Check him out before you go to the usual appliance shops.

β β β β β If you live in Wellington and are looking for your first Hi Fi, this is the place to go. I'll get one thing out of the way, don't expect a plush show room with a listening room. There is barely any space to walk in here and its filled with mostly old Hi Fi equipment. Thats no bad thing thing though. Bill can get you going for as little as $300 or if you feel like splurging, that can be done too. Its up to you. Just don't expect the latest and greatest of equipment. In my experience, none of this matters as long as it sounds good. Besides, you can modernize any old stereo equipment and make it bluetooth compatible with ease. Bill is happy to take back anything you buy, if you are unhappy with it, or, are looking for something else. Need repairs? Thats no problem too. Highly recommended.

β β β β β I had a pair of blown speakers and I took them into Bill to repair. I could not fault the service, he was prompt and he definitely knew what he was talking about. I would highly recommend them. The price was very reasonable for the repair, so much cheaper than replacing.

β β β β β Bill is a lovely guy who will go out of his way to make sure you have what you need in the way of great audio gear. He knows his stuff and is very personable. Even made a house visit at no charge to make sure we had wired it all up correctly. We wanted to boost the sound without blowing the fabulous speakers we bought from him. He put us right. No worries. Such a nice man and awesome shop.
