About Waikato River Trail start
The trails are in the heart of the South Waikato and extend from Atiamuri Village in the south to the southern end of Lake Karapiro in the north. The trail is broken into 5 sections, each section named after the lake that the trail is connected to. For those doing the whole trail, most ride south to north or down stream. This does not mean downhill! For those riding individual sections riding either way is fine.
The 38.3km of trails at the southern end of the trail and the 11.5km at the northern end of the trails are intermediate grade the trails in the middle are graded advanced. The trails are generally 1.5 meters wide with compacted metal surfaces. There are plenty of toilets along the trail but limited drinking water so please be prepared.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Beautiful place to stop and unwind. Good area for a bit of bird watching or trout fishing if you're like me and keep a rod in the car. Yup, I'd recommend giving this place a visit. Park up and enjoy the walk. NZ is the best, no doubt about it.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Have been here previously for a cycle.. Enjoyed it immensely. There is a wonderful carpark, situated well off the main road. It sits beside the intriguing Pokaiwhenua Stream, which you follow at the start of the cycle trail before it feeds into the mighty Waikato river. This time we came for a kayak up the Pokaiwhenua Stream. We were delighted with a beautiful kayak through a canyon clothed in beautiful lush bush and moss, with water trickling in over the rocky outcrops. Magical. The stream is slow moving here, so it was a relaxing kayak upstream as we watched and heard tui and fantails flit and swoop amongst the trees. There were also numerous small black Scaup about the reeds, ducking and diving as we approached. There's definitely fish in this river too. We were the only ones on the river for the whole hour or two! The entry and exit to the river is beside the river trail carpark. Beware it is steep, so could get slippery, but certainly do-able. We had a double kayak.
