Love this place the best in the north island. It's a pity they are allowed motorbikes as it can be noisy and dusty and it's allowing to rip up the dirt road so it's harder to drive in .

A huge missed opportunity for a tent campground. You can only camp in a self-contained vehicle, limiting this campground to the few elite who can afford such vehicles. A few facilities could easily handle a campsite for tents with a small fee to cover management and cleaning. There were only about 10-20 camper-vans parked here in a site that can take probably 1000. And this is during one of New Zealand’s busiest domestic tourism seasons! Every campground we have been to this summer has been full. There are relatively new trees coming up at the self-contained camping area and they are all exotic!! (Oaks by the look). The only good thing about this area is the free parking to access the lake, with some shade.

Lovely sunset view from the high ground and quiet night in the motorhome. Short dusty road to get in. Enjoyed the bike trail between here and Kinloch.

Don't be put off by the driveway in, once you arrive you will be so pleased to find a quiet, beautiful and spacious campervan area. My family of 5 inclusive of our family dog arrived late in the evening (10:30pm) and it was super quite, and although there were loads of other campers there was still so much room to find a park. We have put this on our definite campervan location when next stopping in to Taupo.

Sick bike track here. It was a killer in the heat but coming down Kinloch side was fast with a few lil jumps but with speed will give you around 1m. Make sure to send scouts and be cautious of other people because it's two way. Respect yo.

Absolutely wonderful place to spend the day, the road changes a sand track that will dirty up your car but you won’t get stuck in it & it’s quite fun to drive in that type of terrain. Follow the road to where the campervans & caravans are for access to a larger part of the lake. Simply adorable.
