In 2014 founders Adam Johanson and John Erkkila could see a significant gap in the growing mens grooming market.
The first BarberShopCo store opened in Millwater, north of Auckland in January 2015. By 2016 more than half a dozen BarberShopCo outlets were open across Auckland, creating a buzz in the market and challenging the standards of barbering. By focusing on ‘the thousand details’ that make up superior client experience, BarberShopCo was able to grow at a quick pace with 10 stores open by the end of 2016.
In 2017 the first store opened outside of Auckland in Hamilton, and the pace of growth has continued with 24 stores now established.
The company owns and operates numerous stores while maintaining a franchise structure to provide equity opportunities for employees and franchise owners. To ensure world class standards across a growing network, the company has established infrastructure including the establishment of Promap NZ Ltd and wholesale distribution arm Custom Distributors Ltd. The company also owns The Bowery brand and holds a stake in New Zealand born brand, Earnest Empire.
In 2019 the company was honoured to be selected as a Finalist in the Westpac Business Awards for 'Employer of the Year'.

โ โ โ โ โ I didnt even get a haircut today. Walked into the store and was the second person in line. Wasnt acknowledged by staff, told how long the wait was etc. A second staff member came out to help sort an issue with the eftpos machine. Looked at the line of three customers (by this point) and disappeared back out the back. Left after ten minutes as had no idea how long the wait was and also due to the lack of acknowledgement by staff. Time to try somewhere new.

โ โ โ โ โ Yeah my son went in for for a cut, he was quite disappointed, because the barber didn't listen to his instructions when he said he wanted an inch and a half off the top and the barber didn't listen 3 times. And only cut 2 cm off the top, so now he has to go to another barber to get it fixed. Great establishment but staff need to listen to their customers.

โ โ โ โ โ The worst haircut experience of my life. I'm not someone to complain about much. But when someones doesn't even follow what you ask for, just completely disregards what you ask for. Even after making sure and them repeating it back to you. Asked for the sides to be short and then not too much off the top. Enough to clean it up. Only to spend the next hour getting a haircut which basically looks like someone has just gone and done a no#3 all over. no#3 all over isn't a little off the top at all. That's it all of it off the top. When you have longer hair that you want to keep. Then for it to all go, isn't not too much off the top. Doesn't matter how good the cut is. When its something that isn't what you asked for at all. Doesn't make it good at all. Especially when you have to live with it and its going to take a while for it to even get remotely close to what it once was. Couldn't even stop them when they started cutting because by the time I had realised what was happening, it was to late to even bother. Just end up with a wonky cut that would have to be short to keep it even. Honestly the worst 1hr and worst money I've ever spent
