Binford Luthiery - Onehunga
About Binford Luthiery
Trevor was always destined to a life of working with wood. Having been raised in the rustic setting of a log cabin in the Northern Michigan woods surrounded by an abundance of living tone woods, it was inevitable that he should take up luthiery. His journey started in earnest when he began luthiery study in 2006 on Vancouver Island Summit School of Guitar Building and Repair. Excelling in his craft, he was hired out of school to work for the most prestigious jazz archtop guitar builder in the world – Bob Benedetto.
Trevor had the privilege of working, at times, one on one with Bob and fine tuned his luthiery skills to craft simple yet beautiful acoustic instruments. Not mere guitars but works of art made for making beautiful music. "Living in cold climates teaches you patience. The trees themselves take over twice the time to grow. The trees teach you to be patient and take the time to foster and perfect the craft of guitar building. Patience is everything.”
Now calling Onehunga, Auckland his home, New Zealand guitarists are all the better for it.

β β β β β Trevor was very professional and knowledgeable. Went in to see whether or not my guitars action is high. Helped me lowered the saddle and now itβs much better than before. Definitely will go back if i have any other guitar related problems. Thanks!

β β β β β Trevor has just completed a custom-build short-scale[30"] bass for me. I could not find one that was suitable in terms of construction, components, and quality. It has a [mahogany/maple] laminated "through-neck", Alder body wings, Indian Rosewood fretboard, Gotoh hardware and Lindy Fralin Pickups. The tone is deep and rich, with incredible sustain. It is resonant and loud [even acoustically].
Short-scale basses are popular at the moment and some major brands don't really take them seriously , historically they had a reputation as "student instruments" , but they have a different "timbre" , a big bottom end , and fewer intrusive harmonics, which makes them great for recording as they "sit in the mix" really well.
They are also a bit easier to play.
Awesome result.
Thanks Trevor

β β β β β I took two of my guitars here to be set up to lower the action to make them easier to play. Wow I got them home and found just how good Trevor is at his job. They both sound so great and with the lowered strings, now so close to the fretboard, vibrato, string bending that add flavour to your playing an make you sound good are so easy to do. It is a must to get your guitar set up by a professional before you start to learn to play and Trevor is that professional. Thanks Trevor for the excellent job you did. I will be back.

β β β β β Trevor did an absolutely amazing job with my Maton electric, with re-fretting, adjusting the neck and generally tidying it up. It was the first time I had taken this guitar in for a tidy up after owning it for 14 years, and now it feels as if I had just bought it brand new. I fully recommend Binford Luthiery to anyone who wants work done on their guitar.

β β β β β I have just completed a guitar build at Binford Luthiery. I chose to build a telecaster style guitar with a few modifications. Trevor was extremely supportive in my design ideas and the whole build experience was enlightening and a wonderful experience. The guitar is beautiful and sounds as good as it looks. I wholeheartedly recommend anyone considering a guitar build with Trevor to enroll and get started as soon as a window of opportunity arises. I have gained new skills and a good understanding of solid body guitar dynamics. A great experience. I now feel confident enough to try another build solo.
