One of the interesting monuments to see in the town centre is the historic Bridge of Remembrance, which crosses the Avon River near Oxford Terrace. This is a war memorial dedicated to New Zealanders who served during WWI as well as other war conflicts. The monument was designed by architect William Gummer and George Gurnsey and was erected in 1923. Here you see a traditional arch structure flanked by two seated lions. It is an attractive monument worth spending a few minutes to enjoy for those who appreciate this type of sightseeing during their travels. Note: The Bridge of Remembrance was badly damaged during the Earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 but is now fully repaired.

Beautiful tribute for the soldiers that fought in the WWI for their country. It was opened on the 11.11.1924. The Imperial Loin on each side look nice. If you get to the middle of the bridge and look over the edge on the wall you will see the words QVID NON PRO PATRIA ( What will man not do for his country ).

This arch-like concrete building is called "Bridge of Remembrance". It is very magnificent, but it has some sadness. At this time, the sun came out and baked the bridge's entrance into a warm orange-red. This bridge was built to commemorate the New Zealanders who died in the Second World War, so the commemorative bridge is both a bridge and a monument. The Memorial Bridge is across the Avon River, surrounded by many flowers and trees, and the environment is quiet.
