The French owners of Café Tennyson + Bistro, Julien and Sophie Debord, fell in love with New Zealand when they were here for a year in 2004.
“It was our dream to come back here one day and run a ‘kiwi style’ café with a little French flavour...!”
Dreams do come true and Cafe Tennyson + Bistro is exactly that - a kiwi style cafe with more than a little French flavour in the heart of Napier.
Our Philosophy
We believe in homemade food, cooked with fresh, real, healthy and seasonal ingredients. With this approach, we support local food suppliers such as Y’a Bon French Baker, Epicurean Garden, True Earth, Bostock Chicken and also Little Island Creamy, Brave Brewery, Stonecroft Winery for our drinks.
Our baristas are proud to serve Zealong Tea from Hamilton and Peoples Coffee: a fair trade, organic, small roaster from Wellington served with organic milk.
Café Tennyson + Bistro has been refurbished in a modern Art Deco style to enhance our beautiful city and promote a warm, welcoming service.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Not a great experience, first time here seemed busy as we entered so figured must be a popular spot but very average service, the food was ok nothing spectacular - staff seemed to be all over the place not knowing who was where or who was doing what…
Our food was brought out and we sat for several minutes with no cutlery, I went to ask a staff member for some cutlery she said usually I bring it out but I’m too busy sorry.
I was over this place before I even had my first bite of food, we ate and left.
Not surprisingly though when going to pay our TAB they were there like a flash to take our money. I feel
A 1-star is a bit harsh, 2 was fair for what we experience but this place could easily be a five with better staff attitudes to their work and more importantly their customers.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Very nice Art Deco cafe. French menu and different options for breakfasts. Friendly staff - very very busy as public holiday in Napier and they were rushed off their feet. But still accomodating and friendly. Our food was great and coffee some of the best we had had in Napier.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I used to love coming here! My favourite spot in Napier - but since the change of owners/new wait staff it’s not a great experience anymore, the food is still amazing but that’s all. The service has dropped significantly- heaps of wait staff but they stand around and talk at the counter. They take your drink order at the table but then you have to go to the counter to order food after 15 minutes of no more table service *we were the only couple in the cafe at the time*
No water so we served ourselves, most of the old wait staff have gone and have been replaced by a younger team *which is great* but they don’t really care about customer service.
It was off to a great start with the change of owners but has gone down hill quickly in the last few weeks. Hopefully just teething issues :)
If you want good food then head to Tennyson! But if you want good food and good service head somewhere else. Good luck guys!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ My favourite coffee now in the city. Love the dog water bowls outside. The new owners have added incredible food options to an already incredible menu.
The cabinet options are varied to suit all dietary needs. The amazing baristas are quick and efficient with takeaway orders. All staff are full of smiles when you enter. Nice warm greetings all around. Love the decor especially the brand new chandelier. My new favourite local hangout.
