“It was something like ten or eleven years ago. I was lost and lonely, working as a cook, living in an old motel (The Carillon) in Mount Cook in Wellington, and trying to be a writer. I didn’t have time or will for washing my clothes at the motel, so every Monday on my day off I would walk to Newtown, leave my stuff at a laundry nearby and go to have a coffee at Baobab cafΓ©. There was an eatery called Manon at the back of an alleyway in front of the cafe. I would spy the restaurant from the little window thinking how cute it was. Manon eventually closed down and the place seemed to be abandoned for years. The place looked as old as it could be in Europe, and decadent and bohemian as all the things I loved.

Few years went by and life took over. I married a beautiful Chilean girl who used to cook with me and call me “dictator!”, I learned to speak Spanish like a Chilean, I stopped writing bull… and I got into running some Italian kitchen in town at Mariluca first and then Ombra. Then my friend Luis who runs Viva Mexico next door, passed me the contact of the landlord of that old place in Newtown. The landlord was an old man in an old house in Oriental Bay. He loved that restaurant more than anything he had and he always dreamt to bring it back to life, before it was too late.

Shocking customer service by the Manager Charlie this last weekend after we had reserved a table at what used to be quite a pleasant restaurant. Upon our arrival, we felt that he was quite judgemental and stubborn with an ego that got in the way of being of good service and respect to arriving clients that were most likely older and wiser than him, especially in matters of hospitality and health. Shamefully, he made no effort to seek further details or explanations, as he had already made his mind up about being able to refuse entry to a professional mature couple without any legally valid or true concern. Our human rights were discriminated against, as there was never any real risk. We ended up going to another restaurant that night that attended us beautifully

I went to this place a while ago, still thinking about it to this day. Wonderful decor and ambience. The staff were amazing and service was quick even though it was busy. Food was tasty, and I can't wait to go back!

Just amazing! I walked 30min to get there and it was worth the trip! This restaurant looks like a two story home and you feel history taking you by your senses when you pass the porch. Newton can seem a bit sketchy but this restaurant proves otherwise. Excellent service: the waiter explained to me in detail all the authentic Italian menu. I wanted it all but I knew my belly could not take it so I started with an anti-pasta and a local beer, Garage. This pΓ’tΓ© de foie was just delicious on a fresh and tasty bread. Then the ravioli made its way with a wonderful wine match that was suggested to me. And the grande finale, the Tiramisu, with a cup of coffee just like I make it at home. Thanks to all the staff, I had a very nice authentic Italian experience! Cheers!

Very good ambiance, has two levels, and good size area. Service is good, host is very warm and welcoming. Menu is not very big but good quality food. though it would be great if less salty. I’d come back.

The food was average for the Price alot of the food was dry and definitely needed some type of sauce or gravy, some food on the menu is also misleading but it's a good experience to go to once I guess.

This restaurant is hidden down an alley way... when you enter the front door, you walk into a restaurant of homely ambience, a fireplace that warms up the place... stylish solid chairs, cosy corners with tables scattered around. The menu is authentic Italian, and it changes regularly apparently. There were 4 of us, two ordered the same pasta noodle dish, I ordered a pasta noodle with garlic and anchovies, and the other ordered pork rib main. Everything had an Italian name of which I can't remember... hence why I call it a pasta noodle. We ordered the 3 types of salad they offer, which were placed in the middle of the table and shared by all. They also placed a basket of freshly baked bread, cut into pieces to mop up the sauces/oils from the meals... which we did, very nice. We ordered 3 chocolate panacottas, and tiramisu for our desserts, a lovely way to finish our meals. We will definitely be coming back to try other meals, lovely evening. Thank you ?
