タイヤの空気圧っていくつにしたらいいの？
実はよく聞かれる質問第一位です。日本とニュージーランドでは空気圧の単位が異なるため混乱してしまう方が多いようです。
日本ではkPa（キロパスカル）、NZではPSI（ポンド平方インチ）が標準の空気圧単位です。
車両の重さやタイヤのサイズによって厳密には最適な空気圧が異なるのですが、一般的な乗用車のほとんどは、
210kPa ＝ 30PSI 前後がメーカー標準の空気圧として指定されています。
国際単位系では気体圧力の表現をできるだけ「パスカル」で統一しましょうと、国際標準化機構（ISO）で推奨されているので日本はそれに準じていますが、残念ながらNZではいまだPSIが主流です。
タイヤのクッション性（乗り心地）に支障がなければ指定より1割高く入れるとNZの高速カーブの多い道路と相性が良いうえに若干ですが燃費向上も期待できるので、少しだけ高めの空気圧（33PSI）をおすすめしています。
つまり、ニュージーランドのペトロールステーションで空気圧を調整するときは30～33PSIの範囲にしておくとほとんどの乗用車で適切な空気圧となります。また、モーターウェイなど高速走行を続けた後はタイヤの温度が上がるためタイヤ内の空気も暖められて空気圧も同時に上がります。ですので空気圧の調整はできれば高速走行する前、タイヤが温まる前に行ったほうがより正確です。
商用／貨物用バンやトラックなどで使われる軽貨物用タイヤが標準で着いている場合、扁平率の低いタイヤ（サイドウォールの薄いタイヤ）の場合、緊急用スペアタイヤなどはそれぞれケースバイケースで標準のタイヤとは指定空気圧が大きく異なるので注意が必要です。
言うまでもなくタイヤは車の最重要部品です。パンクの早期発見や摩耗を最小限にするためにも定期的な空気圧チェックを心がけてみてください。タイヤの空気はパンクしていなくても少しずつではありますが徐々に抜けてしまいます。扁平タイヤやコンパクトカーの細いタイヤなど、空気の入る容量が少ないタイヤほど早く圧力が下がるのでより頻繁にチェックが必要です。
