Doughboats Lake Taupo - Nukuhau
About Doughboats Lake Taupo
Hi, we’re the Kells - James, Laurel, and Sophia. And we own and operate Doughboats Lake Taupo. We’ve lived in Taupo since January 2017 and we love the area. James was born and raised in Auckland before he moved to Australia for 10 years and then onto California where he met and married me (Laurel), the American. I grew up in North Carolina and Taupo is one of the only places in this beautiful country that felt like home to me, which is why we left Auckland after three years and moved down here. I’m a nutritionist and James is a design engineer. So how did we end up with the idea of Doughboats?!
Life was rolling as usual when our world was blown up on NYE of 2018 when James was burnt from above the knees to the tip of his toes in a freak bon fire accident. Long story short - Months before the accident we had seriously discussed two business ideas: 1. a paleo donut business, 2. building “pod” boats and running a rental boat business on Lake Taupo. While James was in hospital an ad from the manufacturer of donut boats popped up on his facebook feed and that was the beginning of Doughboats. After the dramas of skin graft surgery, giving birth, and recovering, we hit the ground running towards bringing donut boats to New Zealand. James is the epitome of an entreprenuer and I’ve embraced his way of thinking that anyone can do anything they want to if they will just go all in and give it their best shot.
We love Taupo and we are so thrilled to have brought this fun and unique activity to the lake. We look forward to meeting you!!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We had such a fabulous cruise along the lake front. A lovely social activity for our family catch up. The lake was calm and the view down to the mountains was stunning. We had a grandstand view of the Hole in One, Parasailing and the float plane taking off.
The staff took such good care of us and made the whole experience so much fun.
Would thoroughly recommend!
Thank you Doughboats!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Wow what an amazing experience! Would highly recommend to anybody & everybody, locals & tourists alike to give this a try whether it be just you & your partner or a small group of friends/colleagues.
Owners - James & Laurel Kells were some of the nicest small business owners we've come across, they made sure we were well looked after & showed us how to operate the easy to use Doughboat, which was kitted out with LED lighting & a Bluetooth Speaker, combined with our own Pizza & Drinks we were allowed to bring aboard made for an unforgettable evening with my Wife & I on our Wedding Anniversary.
Overall we had a 10/10 experience out on the lake and will be back again in the near future with our friends & family!
Kind Regards - Nick Ferguson.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Super slow. Didn't reach the bay they recommend because we got a text half way there saying you need to turn back. It took an 1hr and a half to get half way to acacia bay. super boring to take family along as every bored and fell out because we couldn't swim until the bay. I could see how it be fun with friends and drinks but not with a family.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Not a great experience! Accidentally damaged the jet ski it was a fixable little damage which would be covered under insurance but they took all our bond $1000 plus harassed us for more than 3 hours

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This was such a terrible experience. It was very choppy and the boat only went 2 knots. We spent our whole time getting to Acacia Bay to have a swim and didn't even make it before we got a text to come back. I think it is better suited to friends and drinks not a family with kids. Kids ages were 14 12 and 8. My teenager said I think I would rather watch paint dry ?

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Went out over the weekend and had an amazing time. We brought snacks and downloaded a good playlist to listen to for the 2 hours we would be on the water. I wasn’t sure what to expect but I decided to wear my swimsuit and bring a warm blanket. Lucky for us the water was warm enough and I was able to go for a swim. I absolutely loved doughboats and can’t wait for the next time we’re in taupo to do it again. Highly recommend to anyone and everyone! Quick tip: book EARLY if you want to go - the time slots fill up F A S T.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Was a fun morning out with a friend. Perfect for some time out on the beautiful lake. Doughboats staff were awesome, helpful and made sure we knew what we were doing. Bluetooth on board let us play our own music. The wind meant our trip was cut short by a small amount of time but the staff were onto it and made sure we were safe at all times.
Highly recommended for anyone to go on while in Taupō.
