About Down to Earth - Waitomo Eco Tours

About Our Land

Pākeho is the name of the area here in Waitomo. The word Pākeho is the Māori word for limestone, which is the white rock from which the many caves in the region have formed.

The Mangapu Stream runs through Pākeho and over millions of years has formed a deep gorge and large cave system here on our farm.

On our tour you will explore the Mangarongapu Cave. It is at the upstream end of the large Mangapu cave system, which is approximately 4km long and includes the Mangapu Gorge, Mangarongapu Cave, Nemesis and Sterling Silver Caves, Lime Cave, and the Lost World.

The Mangapu cave system is one of only two of Waitomo’s many cave systems that is designated by New Zealand’s Department of Conservation as being of international significance.

As guardians of this beautiful place, we are ensuring it is protected for generations to come.

We hope you love it as much as we do.

Great tour personalised for our small group. Ash was a great guide and was cool to talk with. Photos were taken of us throughout and we could take out own too. Definitely recommended.

If you are going to see glowworms, you have to go with glowing Adventures! No one else signed up for our time, so we got a personal 2 people tour. Not rushed, had all the time on the world. We got great explanations and our tour guide even took pictures of us, including a long exposure one that captured the beauty of the glowworms. We were provided with all the clothing/boots we needed, and got cookies and coffee afterwards. It's on their private farm, so the caves were in pristine condition, non-commercialized. Some areas got pretty tight, and required some scrambling, but your tour guide will guide you into the appropriate areas of the cave. Also inevitable to get water in the boots, but felt great and the clothing they supplied kept us at a perfect temperature. All in all one of the best tours we have ever been on! We were also fortunate to come in the spring when it wasn't too busy and get a great $100 dealing bookme.co.nz 2 days before!

My family of three had an incredible adventure with the wonderful and knowledgeable Ash from Glowing Adventures. We really enjoyed our experience exploring the hidden caves and were in absolute awe of Mother Nature at its finest and the hidden gems that we saw close up. The caves, rock formations, glow worms, stalactites, stalagmites and pillars of rock were out of this world. We loved every minute of this experience and learning more about the incredible Glow Worms and their interesting characteristics. This hidden gem is so well worth a visit! Thankyou Ash!

After having read all of the great reviews here, I went in with high expectations and our experience honestly exceeded that expectation. Michelle and Ash were looking after us on this day and they were both awesome - honest, genuine and just passionate about sharing their little piece of paradise with others. This was their first tour back since Covid and we (myself and my partner) were lucky enough to have it all to ourselves. Ash was very knowledgable of the area, had a true love for the family run businesses and also had a great sense of humour which made it feel like we were just hanging out with a friend, rather than being marched around by some tour guide... like you are in some "other caves". The caves and the glow worms were just incredible - absolutely mesmerising what is beneath the hills of the Waikato countryside and Ash was kind enough to take plenty of photos of us amongst them. We spent about 3 hours in total and there was absolutely no pressure for us to hurry at all. I think Ash was actually just enjoying it as much as we were! haha. Absolutely worth the money and a much better, more personal experience than the larger, commercial caves which have been ruined by tourism. I'm sure we'll be back! :)

The waitomo glowing adventure tour was an amazing and unforgettable experience! Ash was a phenomenal tour guide. Not only did he take extremely good care of us, he also went the extra mile to embellish us with tidbits of information about every aspect of the caves and its various formations and wildlife. We were so fortunate to catch sight of some little friends along the way which made the whole trip all the more exciting! Last but not least, we got a bunch of gorgeous photos to show off our wondrous experience. 10/10 will recommend!

Highly recommend this. Was there just last Saturday and Ash was exceptional with his wit, charm, kindness and very accommodating. This was one of the highlights of my trip to NZ. Totally worth it. You can smell the nature and the whole experience from getting water into your boots to caving under the mountains and spotting the glow worms! Tea and cookies served after the tour was a bonus!

We had an absolutely amazing time going on a tour with Glowing Adventures. Ash was an amazing guide and it's clear he cares about people getting the same enjoyment out of the caves as he does. He took the time to stop and explain things along the way including history of the farm, caves and the background to the tours themselves. The experience with Glowing Adventures was fantastic - right from when you arrive to the finish. This is a magical way to experience the caves and would highly recommend this to anyone visiting Waitomo.

If your someone who likes a smaller more intimate tour, or simply wants to go "off the beaten track" and go somewhere more pristine then this is for you. This was an absolutely amazing adventure. So much better then I expected, and I had high hopes to begin with. Our guide Ash was fun and lighthearted, as well as informative about the area and was down for a chat after the tour over coffee and cookies. The caving was a fun experience and Ash took some wonderful photos of us in the caves with the glowworms too. I cannot recommend this trip enough.
