★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Needs refreshing of signs so that you can read them. Perhaps a little work needed to highlight this location's historical significance. Otherwise quiet and restful place to visit and sit for a bit to enjoy sun and sound of local Tui.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ If you expect to see some remnants, then you'll be disappointed. What's left is just a fenced-up old closed-up well to indicate that it was the site of the first capital of New Zealand; as any building and settlements on site were all burnt to the ground. Which then made the decision to move the capital to Auckland became final. The site is nice reserve with steep walk to the beach, and vast open but secluded grassed area great for tanning.
So, the site is very plain, though the history is significant.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A very quick thing to see if in the area. Sadly not much to see here after the buildings burnt down in 1842, all that remains is a well. It is however a beautiful spot with a nice track to the beach and back to Russell.
