★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Fishy Steve is hands down the best guide I could’ve asked for! (even when he had a broken foot and was on crutches, he still worked his tail off and got me into some nice BIG fish). He is not the type of guide to BS you or slack off and just let you fling around a fly. Unlike other guides I have known, he will actually GUIDE you and put you onto BIG FISH (so you better come with your fish-landing game strong because you do have to actually catch it yourself!) A day with Steve will MAKE your NZ fishing experience. He is very knowledgeable, patient and FUN, Highly recommended.

I had never been fly fishing before, and Steve provided excellent instruction. The gear, fishing location, etc. were great. Steve went out of his way to ensure I had a great time.
I even caught a great trout!

I caught this one with my first cast, and the next on my third! We were just happy to have the experience, we didn't expect to catch anything! It doesn't get any better. Thanks Steve. We will definitely be doing this again!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ My husband and I had a fantastic experience with Steve -- short (half-day) but extremely informative and fun and productive! My husband, an experienced fly fisherman, learned a lot from Steve, and as a beginner I learned as much as I could absorb. Steve is a true teacher: kind, patient, gentle, and ever positive about his students. He knows how to celebrate successes no matter how large or small they are, which made me feel good about what I was learning. Steve knew the river, the techniques, where to find the fish, and how to approach the potential catch. The day was so relaxing and fun and I wish I could spend more time with him. We had spent the previous day with another guide and I can say without hesitation that the difference between the two was extreme: the first guide was tense, impatient, distracted (on the phone), critical and frustrated, especially with me (he really gave up on me); Steve was professional, well-trained as a guide and instructor, relaxed and fun, and all-in with us. I should add that because of Steve's instruction, I landed my first river fish on my fly rod!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Fishy Steve took my husband and I fly fishing with our friends who were visiting from Canada. We had a great day on the river and everyone caught their own beautiful rainbow trout. Not only is Steve an expert fly fisherman, he’s a great teacher, patient and so helpful. Despite our group of 4 people, he was able to give one on one attention to each of us. It was a great day and our friends still talk about it as the highlight of their 3 week trip to New Zealand.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We had 1/2 day beginners fly fishing trip with Steve. We are a young couple holidaying from Australia looking for some fishing experience in Taupo. We had an absolute blast with Steve, he easily guided us on the basics of fly fishing and we managed to hook onto a couple of lovely sized rainbow trout. He knew alot about the area and the ecosystem of the trout in the lake. An affordable experience. Great weather and a fantastic time. Highly recommend giving it a shot !!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Steve took me as a total beginner and organized a wonderful experience. I had a whole day tour, of which the first half of the morning was spent being taught the basics of different setups, how to search for fish and different ways to cast. After that he let me practice my skills getting them up to speed before taking me to a few different spots and applying the knowledge, I managed to catch three trout, including one on the last cast of the day!
If you're a beginner I'd thoroughly recommend Steve, his patience and teaching ability are top notch.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ My husband (an intermediate fly fisherman) and I (definitely a beginner!) went out with Steve for a full day this past week and had an outstanding experience. He was skillful in working with both of us and giving us each individualized instruction while making sure the other was busy fishing! We caught some beautiful fish on two stunning rivers, and my husband is still grinning from ear to ear! Steve was well prepared with the correct gear and various set-ups, knew the area well, and was quite patient with us. You can tell he is passionate about what he does and genuinely enjoys being out there teaching you. Would definitely recommend Steve to anyone at any skill level looking for a positive and experienced guide in the area!
