After 3 weeks driving all over South Island, trying to spot a wild penguin and found none, we signed up for the tour. We had a vehicle, but I do not recommend self-driving to Flea Bay on your own. The mountain roads can be extremely bumpy, so it may even be dangerous if you don't have a suitable vehicle. Moreover, the penguin nests can spread as far as 700 metres uphill from the shore! Those small birds are easily stressed and what if you trample on their nests accidentally? Being horribly irresponsible is a gross understatement here... Also, contrary to the assumption of an earlier reviewer, the shore of Flea Bay is NOT a public beach. Just because some land isn't fenced up doesn't mean it's public - Welcome to New Zealand! So if you trespass, the farmers have every right to chase you away. Honestly, tending a farm is quite enough work, without having to deal with arrogant people who think they know everything... Just cough up the NZD75.00. You're already on vacation and money can always be earned. Damages to nature often cannot be undone. Our group wasn't even that big, just 10 of us led by a husband-and-wife team, Averil and Kevin. Not "touring bus load" of people... A scenic ride took us to Flea Bay on the other side of the volcanic rim. Here we saw the White-flippered Penguins, which are pretty much unique to Akaroa. They spend most of five to six months socialising at sea before returning to nest with a mate. What's funny is, some of these penguins will actually "cheat on" their partners with their neighbours... naughty!

Pretty place but very limited beach access and the road in down the hill cliffs is very steep narrow and gravel. It's not a safe road. Four wheel drive recommend and tourists would be wise to avoid.

breathtaking place, it’s kinda hidden so there are almost no people, encountered few penguins hiding in the rocks

Highly recommend the Pohatu penguin tour as well as spending a day or two in this incredibly beautiful and peaceful place.

Don’t do the tour and probably better not to go there at all! The facts: Flea Bay can be reached by any standard car. It’s just a bumpy drive. A short stroll from the public parking area (including informative sign boards) across the public (!) beach and we saw the cute Little Penguin. The local farmer is very protective but not out of concern for the penguins themselves but the business they generate for him. He was chasing and threatening people, even on public space. It is obvious he wants to protect the penguin tourism $$$. And that’s ultimately why one shouldn’t do the tour: the best would be to leave the penguins undisturbed. That’s the best protection they could get. Touring bus loads of people in exchange of $$$ and disturbing the penguins is for sure not helpful. And truth is: you will get to see penguins up close during your New Zealand trip anyway! In case one still wants to go there: Dawn or dusk are a good timing (when they go to or come from the sea). And the beach, up to the shoreline is public space!

Visit this bay with my tour and do some wild and penguin watching. If your car is not 4WD my recommendation is for you to take a tour cuz the roads can become a little bit crazy (even the roads tell you if you don’t have 4WD don’t use the road) It’s an amazing place with amazing views and still a lot of wild life, we love it!!

Beautiful, natural, secluded place that feels about as remote as it gets. White flippered Penguins nesting in the banks by the beach. Met the farmer who has been there for 40 years and he was perfely friendly. Parking at the end of the track by the DOC sign. Track is for 4WD only and be extremely careful, it's narrow and steep with limited passing places. A mistake could be costly!
