★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This huge steel sculpture was created by Russell Beck and is located at Bluff, just south of Invercargill, and adjacent to Stirling Point. The other end of the chain, a twin sculpture, lies on the coast of Stewart Island at Lee Bay, the official entrance to Rakiura National Park. Created by Southland artist Russell Beck, the sculptural chain is a symbolic link to Stewart Island, where the first chain was installed in 2002. The two chains illustrate the mythological link between the waka (canoe) of Maui and the anchor stone. This is a great spot to stop for photos at the bottom of New Zealand's mainland.
Russell Beck is a retired Museum and Art Gallery Director who lives in Invercargill. Landforms, geology and engineering themes inspire his designs which are represented in public and private collections in New Zealand and overseas. For more than 45 years he has worked in stone, mainly granite and jade. More recently he has concentrated on the production of large works in metal, particularly stainless and mild steel geometric and illusionary forms.
Just take the time to visit this historic and meaningful sculpture when you are in Bluff, or at Stirling Point. It is interesting and unique!
