★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Nice little spot but no beach access as the river flows right in front of the sea and there is also a massive cliff. Nice caretaker at #45 comes to log you in ($5 per person) so no stress. Don’t follow google maps to get here unless you enjoy a long winding roundabout route (which we did actually enjoy) if coming from the North. Google from Ashburton. Much more direct route. Nothing here except lovely clean toilets and an outdoor basin, pump soap and tap. Just pull up and claim a piece of grass and enjoy the sound of the ocean and birds. Beware the beautiful friendly tabby cat. Although he is lovely, if you turn your back, he’ll jump in your vehicle and on your stuff and steal your food. He tried to make off with our cooked chicken in a bag and our packet of bacon ?

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A lovely, peaceful first night out from Christchurch and I had it all to myself. This campsite was clean and tidy with stunning coastal views. As a solo traveller I had a relaxing night thanks to a friendly resident whose home overlooks the site. It's great for bird watching too. Well done to the Ashburton DC, the friendly caretaker and local residents.

Nice picnic area and lovely caretaker (Carol) who shared her home grown grapes with me. Definitely will come back!
