β β β β β Absolutely disgusted at the rude unlawful treatment we have received by Hartleys. We bought 2 necklaces. Later when we wrapped them we noticed a fault in each of the necklaces. These were going to be gifts for our mother's for Christmas and they were of unacceptable quality. They were of unacceptable quality fullstop.
I spoke to the duty manager immediately, explaining the faults with both items, to which she said that was to be expected with costume jewelry there (@$50 for each piece) and I had no right to a refund at ALL.
Duty manager said I would have to wait for the manager to be in store in a few days as she said she knew the rules around this unlike herself - the duty manager at the time.
My husband then went into the store himself as I was in hospital and it was getting closer to Christmas and we wanted our money back. He took the items back and again tried to get our refund which by the NZ Consumers Guarantees Act we are legally entitled to. He is polite and kindly spoken. The much older woman doubled down and refused to acknowledge our rights and also took our receipt and the necklaces. She said we could have a replacement of one of the necklaces, (which my husband pointed out also had a fault). She became extremely irritated and rudely and loudly exclaimed it was all "to be expected with the costume jewellery here". Sure, maybe at the cheaper costume jewellery stores you might expect that however in my experience I've never had any faults like I have with the much more expensive Hartleys products and thats even when ive paid a third of the price.
The woman kept arguing and arguing, doubling down on her legally incorrect let alone unethical position.
She also took our receipt and both of the necklaces, saying she needed to do paper work and after that we'd recieve a credit note and not a refund sometime in the New Year.
I know younger people may go here to buy gifts for the older women in their lives. After this experience of being completely taking advantage of, (I think because we are much younger) but obviously more educated) I would strongly suggest to anyone of any age i
to avoid this store. They have no respect for their customers and no knowledge or respect for the Consumers Guarantees Act. If I could give ZERO I would.
