The man who looks after this museum is quite welcoming and friendly. The museum is beautiful and reflects the history of the Westland and Hokitika. Highly recommended to visit.

WE enjoyed seeing hokitikas history. My husband is a real history buff and thought it made you realise the back story of a town and how it was made up better. It was really well set up and bigger than we expected. A really low cost entry but well worth viewing to get a feel for the area. Well done to their team and community.

If your in the area and have time to learn about the history of Hokitika. This is a must stop and look place. I really enjoyed the museum with it's local secretes and history wonderfully laid out to view from the beginning of it's port days and gold rush era as the largest port on the West Coast up until the modern history of it's (now) more famous annual Wild Food Festival. Swing by and have a look!

What a wonderful accident to have visited the museum and meet David the volunteer resourcing the desk on the day we arrived. He was a font of information and insight into the local history and folk lore. An important resource for the community.

Really neat nuggets of local history clearly lovingly compiled and presented. I especially liked the parts on early aviation and its affect on the West Coasters, the gold rush, and photographs of the perilous development of overland Southern Alps traversal. Also fun fact the building was originally granted by the same oil baron Carnegie that funded so many museums and libraries in The States!

Wonderful little museum with plenty of character and super friendly staff. Free entry but I encourage a donation. Plenty to learn and read. If you take your time you'll need a couple of hours otherwise it is quite small and you can breeze through it quickly if you prefer.

We visited the Museum on the 19th of March 2019. Another great Carnegie building with so much history just on its own. It was great to learn more of the history of the local area and to discover new and interesting facts concerning Hokitika and the surrounding area. This town definitely punches above its weight for interesting places to visit and things to do. Not at all what we were expecting. The museum is definitely worth spending time visiting.

This is a place that is reasonably cheap to visit. The front desk is always very helpful and very able to give great local information. The museum hosts some local shows like the junk to funk show. It has some history of the local gold mining and a permanent display of jade.
