About HUHA (Helping you help animals)
Rarely is there a time at HUHA for quiet and pause but we have been brought to a stop with the passing of Laurie.
Laurie’s story is a typical HUHA one – he was a circus monkey, broken for entertainment and with his broken ribs and stress alopecia he was rescued by HUHA and given a life of love and care and respect and accommodation for all that Laurie needed to recover and be fulfilled.
In typical Kaitoke sanctuary style, he developed a life long friendship with an animal of another species, Jungle, the cat. He had his own fan club and a group of devotees who sponsored his needs.
The HUHA founders, Carolyn and Jim were everything to Laurie. Carolyn flew home, in the middle of a big rescue job, to be by Laurie’s side, to do whatever he needed, to have his back as always. He died peacefully and happy in the usual place, the arms of the people who have always loved him.
Forever HUHA, forever loved; our brother Laurie.
Read a bit about him here in this Radio New Zealand story.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Lovely workers, you all care deeply for every single animal that comes into your care. It's very heartwarming seeing a shelter that loves every animal unconditionally and who work hard to help them find a forever home!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ These guys do a great job looking after animal who cannot find a home. We have rehomed a lovely puppy from them and the service was great, they really care about where the animals will end up, even checking properties to see if suitable.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I'm loathed to write a bad review, everything I seen them publicly do has been great. I reached out after an aquaintance was going to euthanise their cat for being inconvenient.
A staff member got back to me quickly about where to email an add for the cat. I then never heard back. No email to acknowledge they had received it, didn't return my phone call following up on it.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Animals are their passion and you can see that by the amazing rescues they perform. If you are able to volunteer, fundraise for them or donate that would be amazing.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I went into the Huha op shop in Otaki. I was in there for a good five plus minutes, then this older person asked me to leave the store. I looked mortified and then she said I can only have 5 people in the store and you need to leave. I felt shock but left and did not go back. If you are counting numbers you need someone front door to monitor this. I generally brought something as this is a good cause but now rethinking this.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ My partner and I had a terrible experience at the Huha centre in Pautahanui, we had organised to view some bunny’s. After driving an hour from Otaki to the Huha centre (on a Sunday) we were greeted by a young woman with red hair who seemed like she just wanted us to leave so she could go back to doing whatever it was she was before we arrived.
Everytime we tried to ask a question about the bunny’s she just told us to google the questions!? Does Huha actually want anyone to adopt your animals? We left in a terrible mood and with a bitter taste in our mouth as my family have adopted dogs from Huha in the past with 0 issues.
