About Lost Arts Knife Making

Lost Arts exists as a place for people who want to rediscover how to make things by hand, to get pleasure daily from using something they have crafted themselves.

Bruce, a Clevedon local of over 20 years has been making knives since he was a kid. First of all with an old lawnmower blade and now with high quality 1084 steel in a fully set up workshop based in Clevedon, South of Auckland.

Bruce decided to follow his passion for knife making by running workshops and creating an experience around sharing an ancient skill.

Making a tool to use in our daily life is what we evolved to do, we’ve been doing it for 3 million years.”

“The skills are simple, the materials readily available, so let’s give people the experience of using their own hands to craft a tool they will really appreciate.”

We are starting with knife making courses but keep in touch as we will be adding more in the future!

The Lost Arts knife making course is amazing. It was one of the most enjoyable things I've done in a long time. Bruce, is a great teacher with a clear plan of attack, and a great sense of humour. To see all the separate components you begin with, and to turn them into a thing of beauty is incredibly satisfying. There is also very little, to no phone reception, this means no interruptions, which is amazing. You get to focus, and relax. We will be encouraging more people to go!

Highly recommend. Bruce and Ann are fantastic hosts, making the whole day an amazing experience, the hospitality, setting and food are top rate. Bruce is a very good teacher, has excellent set up and tools ….and lots of patience guiding a bunch of novices thru the art and processes of creating a knife from a steel blank. The end results were stunning and it’s hard to believe looking at the finished product that we were able to achieve this in one day. Many thanks Bruce and Ann.

This course was truely awesome. Bruce and Anne were the most amazing hosts. Knife making day was long, hot and dirty, but the knife that I walked away with is one of my favourites and I use it everyday. Bruce's technical knowledge and friendly, approachable attitude meant that I could design and make a knife that not only fits my hand but also fits the way that I work in my kitchen. I highly recommend this course for anyone who likes to work outside of their comfort zone, building and making crafts that are all but lost to modern technology.

An amazing day with skilled people who take the time to talk about the course. The extra knowledge about knife care will come home with me to look after all my knives and give them a longer life. The friendly, show and teach approach made the day even better.

This course was amazing. Bruce is incredibly kind and patient, and has such a way with teaching and sharing his passion. I was so happy with the knife I walked away with and the knowledge of how to make it step by step. Anne is also so hospitable and lovely, the lunch she made was AMAZING (her scones are to die for, and her chocolate chip cookies). Everyone should learn how to make a knife, it gives you such an appreciation for everyday objects that you use but never think about. An awesome experience.

This was an absolutely delightful experience. I can barely cut a piece of timber straight but produced a knife that i was very pleased with thanks to Bruce's patience and guidance. Lovely food and hospitality was provided by Anne and the setting is brilliant enhanced by the minimal data connection which means the office has a hard time disturbing you. The others on the course also make the day as they are like minded people with a common interest. I can thoroughly recommend the experience.

My youngest daughter purchased this for me as a present and what a great day its as. Bruce was an extremely helpful and patient tutor and Anne provided great sustenance. The course is an excellent way to experience a variety of skills and the camaraderie amongst the other participants was a real bonus. I would highly recommend.

I had very high expectations for this course, as I had heard really good things, and even then the course massively exceeded my expectations!! Such a fun day, making a beautiful blade I am in love with. Bruce is extremely knowledgeable and friendly and makes the course very accessible even if you haven't worked with any of the tools / techniques before. The food was incredible, thank you again to Ann for the lovely spread. With morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea all provided, we never went hungry or short on caffeine. Honestly, just an awesome day out. Incredible value for money, given the quality of knife you walk away with. Will definitely be back to do the course again in future.
