About MAINA
That’s where her son, Stu, comes in. Having spent the past 30 years working and training in restaurants all over the world, Stu knows a thing or two about food. His style is one of craft and authenticity, using local, seasonal produce to create dishes which pay homage to the place they’re from. His wife and Maina co-owner Katie knows her way around a kitchen, too. Starting as a bakery apprentice in 1979, Katie is something of a guru on all things baking. Seriously. That brioche. Those handmade marshmallows. Pastries. Fresh bread. Stop it.
After losing their home in the Canterbury quakes, Stu and Katie relocated to Hawke’s Bay for a new start. It didn’t take long for them to feel right at home amongst the abundance of fresh produce and when God offered them their dream cafe space they jumped right in. With their daughter Hayley (walking dictionary of wine, coffee, and music) in charge of the front-of-house, Maina is run by a team of family and friends who understand and appreciate the importance of something as simple as sharing a meal or a coffee.

We ate there again in Jan 2022 and had another amazing meal.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Arrived at 1.45 and were snapped at, “the kitchen’s closing soon so what do you want” no time to look at menu so quickly ordered. Then when we finished our friend asked us if we would like another coffee. Same person then snapped back “coffee’s off” I think this person needs to go and learn customer service skills. It was all about the “Tone” of this person. Food was good, however we will not be going back again to be spoken to like that. This is the second time we have struck the same person and both times the same unfriendly attitude.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Lunch on a warm HBay day, Havelock. Service excellent. Well spaced and timely efficient arrival of food from order. Indoor or outdoor setting. Supportive, helpful and enthusiastic personnel. Great interaction with us and within themselves. Felt connected. Food great. Atmosphere good for a chit chat. Relaxing, music in the background. Will certainly visit again.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ As always, this quaint little cafe never fails to please. Great service, excellent food and scrummy coffee. Even when they are under the pump as they were today, the staff are incredibly efficient and professional. Highly recommend to anyone who loves great coffee and excellent food.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Mostly good experience at Maina. Went there for lunch, and the food was quite good.
The service was generally good and friendly by most of the staff, although one of the older staff members snapped at me for trying to slightly move a large heavy table so that a couple of senior patrons from another group could squeeze into their seats which were pressed against the wall. She wasn't any more pleasant when ordering my food at the counter. I do appreciate they may have been very busy that day, but no need for the tone.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Breakfast was lovely! The full cooked breakfast & the pancakes were delicious and good portions. Ambience was good. Our only negative was that none of the staff: kitchen nor serving, wore masks at all. This is the first cafe/eating place that we've been in during pandemic where this is the case.

This place is amazing, I have been their for breakfast and dinner. The staff their are like family, the whole place has a really good vibe. The pancakes I had from their were absolutely amazing, everything went well together. It has good food and you should really try it out, it also has good selection of food if your gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian or vegan. Their selection is amazing. You should see the pancakes I got myself for breakfast one morning, Check it out with the attached image. You should go check out this amazing place.

Breakfast was delicious and cooked well, friendly staff and service, food came out quickly, and the menu had plenty to choose from. Good coffee, good smoothie, good food, handy location if you’re passing through! Definitely coming back next time I’m over.
