★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I arrived at 7:30 in the evening at the local RV park hoping for some accommodation. Lucky the caretaker let me have cabin @ $40. Went for a walk at sun set. Kicking myself that I did not have my camera. What a beautiful place at sun set. My pics are sunrise :)))) The insect and animal tracks are good as I found in the desert. :)).
Please enjoy this place.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This is a great sandy beach edged by high cliffs. You can walk about 3 or 4km to the end where at low tide you can round the cliff and see a cove with a fresh water waterfall. If you go the other way you can walk along the Patea river for about 5km to the waste water plant where is lots of bird life. There is also a shipwreck on the beach. This is called the SS Waitangi. It sank in 1923 and resurfaced in the late 70s where it remains today.. It broke up while trying to cross the bar in rough weather. There are also paths that take you to the cliff tops where there is a viewing platform and you can see where the Patea river meets the Tasman sea. In the distance you can view the windmills at the wind farm. Altogether an enjoyable place to visit.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A cloudy day, high tide and a great place for some awesome photos. Visited a couple of times and can normally get some great shots of the waves crash over the old wharf or people out fishing.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Patea Beach. Wild west coast beach. Shipwreck right beside Mana bay. Beach is long - good walk. Swimming in estuary or little mana bay when tide in. Fishing from end of Breakwater or from the boat ramp situated along the estuary. Children's playground, big sand dunes to run up and down. Toilet, BBQ's, Tables with seating. Freedom Camping spots

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great spot to visit.
Seeing the waves crash against the old wharf, and run it the river mouth gives some great photo opportunities. There is also a good view of the windfarm from the wharf.
It is a very windy and rough beach, so would not advise swimming. But definitely a great place to visit nonetheless.
There are public toilets There, and freedom camping is permitted.
