Mode Rentals - Māngere

I would not recommend Mode Rentals. To cut a long and painful story short, during our inspection of the vehicle allocated to us, we voiced some concerns about the lack of tread on one of the tyres. The Queenstown branch staff were unhelpful and unable to address our concerns or answer our questions. We dealt with various staff members throughout the company, including staff at the Christchurch and Auckland branches, due to the fact that Queenstown staff were unable to answer our questions. I note the reply to this review is just a copy-and-paste comment used for all of the reviews I have left on their various Google profiles, which I have done because we dealt with employees throughout their company, including the CEO, Philip McIntyre. We decided we were not happy with the state of the tyre and went to another rental company. We would not have felt safe driving that car on a 100km road in the rain, and were surprised it had a WOF. We requested a refund for the car we never got to use but over the following weeks we struggled to get any clear communication out of Mode Rentals. We spoke on the phone to various staff members, including those in their Christchurch and Auckland branches, all of whom could not assist. We finally resorted to contacting the company director, Philip McIntyre, who advised us that the vehicle met the "minimum safety requirements" to obtain a WOF. He said he would take our feedback onboard in regards to customer service, but maintained that because the vehicle was "fit for purpose," he would not refund us. We advised him that we likely would have taken the vehicle if his staff were able to address and alleviate our concerns and that, therefore, the issue of customer service and vehicle safety were not separate but actually connected. If his staff had been able to provide appropriate customer service at the time of vehicle inspection, we would have likely taken the car, and would not have been $500 out of pocket due to their incompetence. But the director of Mode Rentals does not appear to be capable of processing this simple logic. He would not even meet us half way by offering a partial refund. We feel Mode Rentals has acted unethically. I would not be surprised to see this company be dragged through Fair Go at some stage in the near future. I would do it myself if I had not already wasted enough time on this. Save yourself the hassle and use another company for your next holiday or business trip.

Rented a Nissan Leaf out of the Auckland Airport branch. After hours pickup from Heartland Hotel was very easy, and the car was great. Was really disappointed however at the drop off experience back at the depot. The return of the car seemed to take a lot longer than was necessary, and then during the courtesy van ride to the airport we had to ask the driver to stop texting on his phone while trying to drive. He apologised to us, but then almost immediately took a phone call on his mobile, without using hands free and holding it up to his ear. Was very relieved to make it to the airport without incident, as we actually felt quite unsafe.

Had booked a rental car with Mode Rentals plus after hour pickup at the AKL airport. Everything from communication, contract to pickup worked out perfect. Great service, great car, great value for money. Happy to recommend Mode Rentals to everyone. Thanks!

When picking up car it was exceptionally clean and over the 5 weeks we had it, it never gave any trouble. This is not the first time we have rented a car from Mode and will certainly do it again, on our next trip to NZ in September. Would not hesitate to recommend Mode to anyone.

I rented a Nissan Leaf for 4 weeks and it was great. Picking up the car from the Auckland Airport branch took just 3 minutes and I was on my way. Towards the end of the first 2 weeks I decided to extend my hire - I scored a better deal and was able to hold on to the car without problems. I must add that __mode is one of only a few places where you can rent a high spec EV (Japanese import) for a very fair price. With the current petrol prices, this is by far the most economic and best value rental option.

It was a lot to have to do paper work before I picked up the car. They kept calling me about it, texts and leaving messages. I didn't really have time for it but I made time because they said my van might not be ready if I didn't. I had to fill out the forms online, scan in the front and back of my license. I thought it would save time during pick up but it did not. Pick up still took ages! I rent cars a lot and the company I usually deal with make the pick up process so easy because I get the best insurance. I only came to Mode because my normal place doesn't have vans. Hopefully now that I've done the paper work I am in the system and the pick up process will be easier for me next time. The van was good. It was clean and drove well. Thank goodness drop off was easy.

Picked the car up at Christchurch. Clean and tidy. Took us around the Sth Island on our road trip for 3,000 KMs without a problem. Extended our return time by a few hours when flight was changed at no extra charge. Great service. Very happy and would definitely recommend.

We rented a Nissan Leaf from Mode for almost three weeks as we drove around New Zealand to catch up with family. We were very happy to be able to rent an electric vehicle so could ensure that we were doing our bit to make sure as tourists we were minimising the emissions we created when travelling. The car was great - excellent boot space for a family of four. Plenty of pep and go and easy to drive. My tips for renting a nissan leaf car in NZ are to not plan long trips for one day. Rent at an additional cost a charger with a three pin connection so you can charge up over night and then set off for your day and minimise your range anxiety. Also note that while New Zealand has a good network of chargers with Charge Net these chargers do go down and can take several days or a week to repair so having your own charger will mean you have an option if the local charger is not working. From what I hear there are another 60 charging spots through out NZ planned for the next 12 months so the network will only get stronger.
