Rangitoto is just a 25-minute ferry ride from the city centre. You can walk to the top of Rangitoto on foot, or if the kids are tired then there is a 4WD train tour to the top that travels through the lava crops and pohutakawa forest. Then the kids just need to walk part of the way to the top of the summit. At the top, you get a superb view of the Hauraki Gulf, Waitakere Ranges and Hunua Ranges.
