About Neko Ngeru Cat Cafe

Welcome to Wellington’s first Cat Cafe – Neko Ngeru!   “Neko” means cat in Japanese and “Ngeru” also means cat in Maori so our name is translated as “Cat Cat” Cat Cafe!

Ken and Richelle met in the same school in Osaka, Japan, which is Ken’s home town. (Richelle is from San Diego, CA)  At the time Ken had two rescued cats (Mi Two and Madara) and Richelle decided to adopt another one (Mao, he was one day away from being euthanized) after they got married. They took their three cats to every country they lived, Kuwait, the US, Mexico and China. They not only bought their own cats but also rescued, fostered and found homes for many others in the countries they lived. In Shanghai. Ken joined the animal rescue group, Bow Meow Shanghai, and attended many adoption events, organised two of his own adoption events at the school where he worked, and found homes for many rescued cats and dogs.

Faced with the need to stop teaching PE due to physical limitations, Ken hit upon the idea of opening a cat cafe in New Zealand. While in Shanghai working with rescue groups, it became clear that the main difficulty in getting animals adopted was giving people chances to get to know them. A cat adoption cafe seemed a perfect way for people to meet a cat in a homey setting to see if it is the one to bring home.

After a successful crowdfunding campaign and miraculously opening on time, Ken and Richelle are finding out what it means to have a dream come true. Usually, most of the adoptable cats have prospective families lined up waiting for their cat to become available as new cats come in to replace them.

The cafe has been successful in finding homes for cats (152 adoptions in three and a half years) but it has not been profitable as a social enterprise. Working without wages for a while is something Ken and Richelle are prepared to do as new business owners, but the Petone location didn’t get enough customers to allow them to pay their workers a living wage. Also, they found that living away from the cafe didn’t give them the ability to care for the cafe cats as well as they wanted to. Therefore, they have decided to move.

Currently, they are searching for a building they can buy where they can live and have the cafe in a more densely populated area to be more convenient for more of their customers to visit more often.

You can help by shopping at our stand at Welly Collective on Courtenay Place or from our online shopping page, and telling your friends about Neko Ngeru. And, if you happen to know someone who is selling a building that would suit us in the Wellington area, please put us in touch.

A lovely experience at this Cat Cafe, selling all things 'cat'... some the cafe food is Japanese inspired, I had the Okonomiyaki, worth the 30 minutes wait, photo attached. You can spend time in an enclosed part of the cafe with the cats. And the artwork in the restrooms are stunning...a lot of little cat nik naks for sale too... Awesome!!!

Nice place to go for cat lovers who don't own cats ?. EDIT: As a cat owner, I felt like this place was a bit underwhelming. I get more of a thrill when cats on the street approach me. The food and service was good, but I don't think this place is something I would go out of my way for. I think this cafe is great for non-cat owners and love animals and being in the company of cats.

The is a major destination spot for cat lovers visiting Wellington and the Hutt Valley. The staff are friendly, the food excellent (ooh the cakes!!) and the coffee fantastic. The cats are all friendly and interactive, but there is also a quiet space away from the public if they get a touch of popularity overwhelm! These cats are well cared for. There is also a selection of the nicest kitty retail shopping you could hope to find. A focus in made in New Zealand, and quality Japanese cat merchandise means you will adore this place from the moment you enter. GO NOW!!!!

Extremely cute and clean place. You can choose to get food or go in and interact with the cats, or both! The staff were very polite and informative. They are attentive and great at explaining how things work. Such as explaining the airlock/double door system before going into the cat area, and how you need to sanitize hands and wipe feet before going in. We paid for one hour in the cat area and I got myself a hot chocolate. The hot chocolate was very cute with a cat image on it. The staff inside was friendly and very diligent in looking after human guests as well as the felines in there. Our ending time was written on a little sign and when we forgot, the staff member was very polite in inquiring if we wanted extra time. The cats were very friendly and had lots of space to climb and stretch. Chenzo was a great bio-security/bag check cat. Some cats wanted cuddles, others wanted to play, and some just wanted to snooze and they had lots of places to do that. The cats even had a small cat-only door to go out back if they needed a break. All the cats seemed healthy and relaxed. There were booklets on each table explaining all about the cats, and people were free to sit on the bean bags or on the floor to play with the cats. It didn't smell of cat, and seemed like a great place to chill out with cats. Even catching up with friends was great, so long as you're not too loud and don't mind being interrupted every so often by a furry friend wanting some pats. The merchandise they have are really cute too.

I have been wanting to go to Neko Ngeru cat adoption cafe for some time, and when I finally got there it didn't disappoint. I found the whole atmosphere so relaxing. I loved every minute of my hour there just chilling out with the beautiful cats, while sipping a yummy hot chocolate. For cat lovers this could be close to heaven. The staff are really lovely too.

Staff were really friendly and gave us a good induction before we entered the cafe space with the cats. We ordered the Devonshire tea set and the food is so cute! I also recommend the okonomiyaki; it's delicious both vegetarian or with meat. It was lovely to spend time with the cats while we ate and had tea. If you love cats, you'd love this place. Watch out for cheeky paws aiming for your desserts!
