★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We actually stopped on the other side of the bridge at the edge of Arthur’s pass park to take in the view. It was really windy when we were there and the bridge at times would be lost under a sea of dust

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This is a nice 2km trail that winds through beech forest grounds alongside the Waimakariri River. Basically, it the first stretch of the the longer Waimakariri Valley overnight route that begins at this particular trailhead.
The trail is relatively easy and rides a sloping section of the forrest which opens from time to time providing views into the valley and the Turkey Flat, a wide section river bed. The views are quite nice. Eventually, at the end of the O'Malley's Trek, you can descend down to the Turkey Flat where you encounter the small river branches and more beautiful landscape.
Overall, we really liked this trek which is around 10km east of the Aurthur's Pass Village and would definitely do it again during future visits to the National Park.
Nice: There is a small carpark which you will find immediately east of the one-lane bridge that crosses the Waimakariri River on the West Coast Highway. When you see the DOC O'Malley's Track sign, follow the gravel road into the forested area around 40 metres to the place where you can park your vehicle. There is a toilet facility there as well.
