★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This is such a beautiful spot.Seemingly untouched apart from the small suburb of houses at the eastern end of the beach which is a bit of a spoiler. There is a lovely walk from the eastern end to the top of the 197 stairs (I think 197) which is easy going if you are fit, and takes you to a lookout with stunning views of the Mercury Islands, Great Barrier and Crayfish bay. Opito Bay is without doubt my favourite beach on the Coromandel Peninsula. If you are into walking, then the stairs and the return walk along the length of the beach will take you about 1hr 40 mins. Plan your walk for a couple of hours either side of low tide as access to the steps to the lookout is along the high tide mark over the rocks. Swimming at Crayfish bay is divine, deep, clean and clear but futile if there is a large surge or surface chop. When you leave and head back to Kuatunu, stop at Luke's Kitchen for a fab pizza and a cold bevvie. Enjoy and safe travels.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Beautiful and calm clear waters for swimming. Drive carefully as metal roads and narrow and winding. Worth it though. No food/store available so be prepared with everything you need. Keep dogs on a leash as is a bird nesting area.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A friend and I went for a hike and swim here and absolutely loved it. We lucked out with gorgeous weather and saw only a few other people. Highly recommend making the drive out here early in the morning and spending your day adventuring around. Walking paths and a bit of cliff jumping??

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Gem of a place. Shame there is no freedom camping or campsite there though. Also the walk over to crayfish bay is well worth it, but would recommend going over there when it’s high tide for the best view of it!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Views to die for - and an amazing beach, if you like seclusion - you’ll be lucky to see anyone else on it most of the year, but don’t go over the hill thinking you’ll find a nice cafe somewhere because there isn’t one.
