The current PlaceMakers operating structure developed following the 1988 merger between Fletcher Merchants and Winstone Trading Limited (that included Odlins and Zip Trading).
FLETCHER MERCHANTS LIMITED
In 1910 James Fletcher established a joinery factory and began Fletchers long association with the timber industry. Over 70 years, Fletchers became one of the largest timber merchants. In 1958, Fletchers expanded into building materials merchandising by purchasing a number of companies including McCallum and Co Limited, HC Kitchen Limited, Felvins Limited, Ellis and Burnand Limited and several branches of John Burns Limited.
Fletcher Merchants, as it became, introduced the hardware supermarket / one stop shop concept into building materials merchandising in New Zealand and in 1981 they adopted a new trading brand - PlaceMakers.
THE WINSTONE GROUP
The Winstone name goes back as far as 1864 and over time grew a reputation supplying an extensive range of materials to the building and construction markets. Winstone Trading Limited was formed in 1984 and over five years grew to provide national coverage by purchasing a number of smaller businesses including Odlins and Dudding Brothers.
The merger of Fletcher Merchants Limited and Winstone Trading Limited in 1988 produced the largest and only nationwide building materials chain in New Zealand.

β β β β β Fantastic for the central city. Better than bunnings and mitre10 with it smaller more exclusive brands and expert knowledge from builders and traders rather that sales associates who dont know what you mean.

β β β β β Pacemakers have installed a new kitchen showroom. It's fantastic! It has a great range of ideas, & the 2 ladies that were staffing the area (Jenny & Maryanne) were really knowledgeable & helpful. They gave us really good advice, & we left with a much better idea of how to move forward & how to budget the build. I'd recommend them to anybody who are building or renovating.

β β β β β Worst PlaceMakers in NZ! Second bad service experience. Went to buy deck timber, this turned into a massive effort for the yard staff.
It took several staff discussions and a manager before we finally were helped.

β β β β β Terrible product which only surpasses their unwillingness to follow up. Bought a full kitchen from these guys 10 yrs ago & it started delaminating at about the 7 yr mark. The first couple I thought were a one-off & tried to repair myself but now they're failing across the board. When I took the handles off the front facing literally fell off 7 of the doors. When I first contacted them the first response was that 7 yrs is a reasonable time frame for their product....keep that in mind when buying their product. I don't know anyone that buys a whole set of kitchen cupboards & expects to see about 7 yrs out of them. The next deflection of responsibility was that the company that they contracted to is now out of business (no kidding!) & they weren't responsible - last time I checked Placemakers doesn't actually personally manufacture anything they sell. Once these arguments were swatted away as ridiculous, they correctly acknowledged the product was no longer under warranty but they also acknowledged the product was obviously flawed in the first place & they would 'work something out for me' for replacements. I'm still waiting over a month later. They've clearly never been interested in reasonable accountability or even integrity in their dealings & I'm done chasing them. Beware though when making any major purchases from this establishment.
