★ ★ ★ ★ ★ WEAR LONG PANTS on the Otangane Loop!!!!
We found there were many scratchy vines across the path which attacked my legs and a lot of the second half of the loop we were walking through unavoidable grass above our knees which yanked out leg hairs. Painful!!
It's a decent walk and once you're past the swing bridge it gets steep for around an hour. We did the Otangane Loop last weekend and it was dry. Under shade most of the way but on the loop in some parts you are in the sun. In all it was 18.5km and took around 7 hours (including stopping for views/food and a quick swim on our way back along the river). I enjoy this track for the exercise, close proximity to Palmy, and views.

A great trip out for a tramp through the wilderness with some great stops along the way for a dip in the steam. There are a quite a few loops that vary in length and difficulty.

Just one thing to look out for. The last stretch of road to the parking area is a winding single lane dirt road and the only problem we encountered were idiots in speeding vehicles not taking oncoming vehicles into consideration. This makes the road rather unsafe to use...

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This was the mother of all beasts, training to do the Tongariro crossing. We did the Sledge track and Toetoe loop including platinum mines. From the swimming holes you start climbing steadily all the way up to the junction on top. Propper hiking or tramping gear required, including decent shoes. very rewarding with amazing views. Platinum mines loop had long grass and "bush lawyer" Long drop toilet at entrance very clean!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great walk with different tracks for everyone and well signed! I completed the loop, crossing the swinging bridge to then return to the car park via the mountain bike tracks. Would highly recommend this for a shorter and less intense walk, although still steep in places.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great place to hike. Did the Toe Toe loop and back in just 4h 15min. Some parts of the Toe Toe loop are a bit slippery other than that, well maintained and worth doing the trip. The gravel road leading up to the carpark is fairly well maintained with a couple of potholes.
