Great day for a walk. Took an hour up and about 45mins down. Me and my bro's annual walk to summit

Awesome views, steep climb from kiwi crescent. The track destroyed by mountain bikes unfortunately and now a mud slick almost the whole way under the trees.

Great spot for riding. Not enough tracks though. the Adventure park is taking an age to find to fruition.

We went on a sunny day from Camp Elsdon with two groups, one from the newer route to the top of Colonial Knob - via Te Ara Utiwai. This avoids the slog up 1.8km of steep steps. Instead, 6.1km steady graded trail to the top. The other group went via the left turn over the bridge to go via heavy 1.20hr cardio steps to lookout. Here you can picnic or carry on to ridge line Colonial Knob and trig. See views of south island, Makara one way and Kapiti coast line the other way. Zig zag walk is 2.15hr for short walkers return otherwise 3.5hrs full walk return. Enjoy the spectacular ridge line views.

Great on a good day. Hard slog to get there but well worth it. Bring water and warm clothes.

There are different routes for doing this. The one I did before was from the Broken Hill Carpark near Spicer Landfill. This route is very scenic and passes through the Colonial Knob Reserve. The second option is to start from Camp Elsdon. Which is the one I describe here: The first portion was the Te Ara Utiwai. Starting from the Camp Elsdon car park on Raiha Street. A gentle climb to the Rangituhi Lookout through native bush. Reaching a height of 346.8m over 5.13km. There is a steep 1.8km mostly steps option as well for this section. The weather was changing fast. By the time I reached the Rangituhi Lookout clouds were moving in thick and fast. From here it was a gentle 2.1 km uphill walk to the Colonial Knob Summit at 468 m. On a clear day it offers views of the Inland Kaikoura Range in the south to Mt Taranaki in the north-west. But today I barely managed to understand the blue color of the sea in Wellington! Bring clothes for changing weather and carry a water bottle for sure.
