About TaiyaKiwi
With our passion to expand the popularity of Japanese Matcha Tea in New Zealand, we started from a tiny Matcha Cafe in the heart of Wellington in 2017. As we thought Taiyaki (Japanese fish-shaped waffle) is the perfect match with Matcha, the cafe’s theme was “A little Taiyaki & Matcha Bar”, the 1st of such a shop in New Zealand.
β
Our tiny cafe was’t super popular with long queues every day but luckily we had many loyal customers and social media followers. We were so happy to see how many Matcha and Taiyaki lovers were increasing in Wellington. However the corona-virus changed the world in 2020. It was a bit hard to keep the little cafe open after the lockdown with so many people are working from home and no travelers from overseas.
β
So we’ve decided not to extend our shop lease in August 2020. (Perhaps we may open a taiyaki and matcha shop again sometime in the future!) We then shifted our Matcha passion to online. As we love Matcha and we still have passion to introduce Matcha to more and more kiwis, we still maintain our online store and we hope many kiwis try our ceremonial grade Matcha from Uji Kyoto!
β
Some of you might think Matcha tastes bitter, however the highest grade ceremonial ones actually taste naturally sweet. So please try our TaiyaKiwi Matcha today!

β β β β β Super cute little cafe β my iced matcha latte and custard taiyaki were on point. This place is just off Lambton Quay, you just gotta trot up the Plimmers Steps and youβre away laughing. Itβs so worth it. Not much sitting room inside but plenty of spots around outside to chill out at.

β β β β β This is a piece of Japan right on our front door stop (well ... Wellington's at least), as far as I know, this is the only place that even makes fresh Taiyakis, and also makes one of the most authentic Matcha I've had in New Zealand.
It's well hidden though, you have to go all the way up the Plimmer steps to get there but once you do it kind of feels like you stepped into the backstreets of Kyoto itself.
The matcha they use here is actually from Uji, Kyoto, very legit, and the Taiyaki also uses Adzuki (red beans) sourced from Japan as well, and they are so delicious.
Doesn't matter if you've had a Taiyaki before or you just want to try, it's worth going. The shop is very small, actually not unlike the actual shops in Japan, and it can be a very calming experience to go inside, get a Taiyaki, and drink some fresh Matcha.

β β β β β The matcha tea is prepared authentically and the taiyaki was fresh off the grill. Very quaint place to chill and have snacks. We had the custard and red bean filling and they were very delicious! A must-visit!

β β β β β I haven't had lots of Taiyaki before but this was such an amazing find! My taiyaki was crunchy, and my friend's was soft and freshly made! Then classic red bean filling was very creamy, sweet yet not too sweet, and was just delightful. Will definitely return whenever I'm in Wellington next!
