About Taranaki / Egmont National Park Visitor Centre

Native species are fighting for survival from predation by rats, stoats and possums. Without protection, we risk losing New Zealand’s unique natural heritage and biodiversity.

Alongside our partners, we use 1080, large-scale trapping and other methods to protect native birds, bats, frogs, lizards, giant land snails and forests. We do this work at important conservation sites across the country to help them recover.

1080 is the most effective tool to control introduced predators over large areas and rough terrain. Decades of research shows it protects vulnerable wildlife and forests and helps populations to grow.

The programme is a critical part of the Predator Free 2050 movement. It is protecting the remaining populations of native species while other tools are being developed to eradicate possums, rats and stoats.

To help achieve this, we are consulting and partnering with hapΕ«, iwi, communities, landowners and other organisations involved in conservation.

Amazing national park with plenty of view points of mt Taranaki and tracks to view waterfalls. Plenty of parking around the park and three roads leading to the upper area of the mountain with one ski field. The roads a pretty windy and narrow in some spots, but otherwise a great place to come.

Heaps of walks of different lengths. Stunning as we were there on one if the rare fine days and actually saw the mountain which I was positive was fake news. My only reason not 5 stars is because some unrespecatable people left rubbsh laying around and there were no bins to put it in once I picked it up.

Beautiful park! Freedom campsites with clean toilets and water, lot's of hikes for every type of fitness and what a view over taranaki! Well worth the visit, highly recommend! Make sure it's a clear day, and be prepared for weather to change in a minute, the mountain can be rough sometimes!

Walked the Pouakai Crossing today. Started from the Visitor Centre which was definitely the right direction to go in (more downhill than up). The Visitor Centre coffee was OK, but not great by any means; they do have some decent looking food for purchase (cakes, slices etc) but of course you should bring your own food for the actual walk. Staff at the Visitor Centre were helpful and welcoming. We're quite fit in our mid-late 30s and finished in 6 hours 10 mins, including a quick lunch break at Holly Hut, stopping to wait a few minutes for the track workers to do their thing, and detour to the Tarns. The Tarns were worth the 10 mins detour but nothing to crazy rave about. The track works in progress will make the track amazing but still be prepared for scrambles over the rocks at times. Sneakers were totally fine, but only because there has been a month of sun recently, if not you would benefit from proper boots. The boardwalk steps at the end are a bit onerous, but unavoidable. Walked the whole thing in a singlet and shorts, but again only because the weather has been great...we didn't need our wet/warm weather gear at all (though of course you should be prepared for anything when up that high!).

Second time up here. Is a nice little place to come visit. Bit disappointed that one of the exhibitions was closed off and the cafe was closed though. ? Could do with some air conditioning or a fan too. Otherwise...a great diversion. ?

The most epic hike ever! Insane views from the summit (and the whole way up too) which makes the very challenging track all the more worth it!
