About The Backyard Gastropub
ABOUT US
We are a family friendly bar and eatery located in Whatawhata (7 mins west of Hamilton, heading towards Raglan).
The Whatawhata Hotel/Bridge Hotel/Whatawhata Tavern/The Backyard Bar & Eatery has been part of the village of Whatawhata since the 1800's.
154 years on The Backyard Bar & Eatery is still a place for people to have a drink and hang out with friends and enjoy themselves - as it always has been. But it is now so much more - live music, sport, food, family and community are the key ingredients.
Roger and Krissy bought the rundown tavern at the end of 2016 after living locally and seeing the potential the place had. They bought life and fun back into the place and it became a destination pub for the people of the Waikato and beyond.
During the Covid-19 lockdown of 2020, the team worked hard to transform the place from a dated tavern into a functional, warm and inviting place.

I'd love to say the establishment, service and the staff was absolutely amazing!!! There was a fast handling of drinks and had a very professional phone mannerism.
However, there were only two vegetarian options worthy of notice (not saying they were meant to be a 5 star Vegetarian cuisine provider) but the option we did opt for was pretty small. For $18, I basically got a handful and a half of food. Honestly could've gotten a lot more from other establishments for that price.
It does make me wonder what the more expensive options would look like.

The outdoor area is always a fabulous spot, drinks were good but the guys mentioned service was slow, as staff busy sorting out their technology rather than serving customer first and sorting that later. Food was good, hot and tasty, and the waitress was absolutely lovely. Bathrooms very clean as always.

The environment is terrific with various areas from which to chose: private & personal, large groups, outdoors with live music, yes - there are many choices from which to choose.
Staff are friendly & helpful with choices, food, Internet passwords, and so on.
I selected an "ultimate" burger with batter-fried chips. I was delighted!
Yes, I'll be back!
