Paparoa is a jewel of a village and the Paparoa Village Café is jewel of a café. The main seating area is a dominated by a spectacular and massive painting of a ghostly cattle stampede that just arrests you as you walk in for the first time. It's so incongruous and unexpected that at first you don't know what to make of it. It took me only a moment to decide that it was kind of cool and also a really great painting. But keep looking because there are more great paintings on the walls, all by the talented and (in that quaint kiwi manner) self deprecating owner. The Paparoa Village Café, unlike your typical Ponsonby Road café, is a warm and friendly place where you can sit in a comfy armchair and drink great coffee or have lunch out the back in the hidden garden. The food like the coffee is excellent and made on premises. However if you happen through Paparoa on a Saturday when the farmers market is happening across the road I strongly suggest ordering a bacon and egg sandwich from the Long Flat Bacon Company stand then grabbing a coffee from the Paparoa Village Café. Coffee in hand wander back across the road, pick up your bacon sandwich, then grab a seat at the picnic table in the reserve behind the carpark. But any other time stop and eat at the café and for goodness sake try the scones Paparoa Village Café. For the coffee, for the food, for the art, for the friendly people. Worth a stop!

The best source dough bread but you need to be there early on a Saturday morning or order the day before. . A delightful surprise so far out in the country.

Nice little cafe, had a very good birthday lunch there with a group of friends. I think we all had finger food that day, but they had a board menu as well, which sounded pretty tasty.

Passing through on the way from Dargaville and needed a caffeine hit. Stopped in here to try out there coffee. Was passed to the young girl as the older lady was busy on the phone and in the kitchen. No worries! Lazily glanced at the board and noticed coffees priced at $4.didnt look anywhere else as I figured I had the price in my head. When I paid, was charged $11 for 2 coffees which is really expensive out here. There was no transparency around the sizes. No one asked me which size I would like, which is the oldest cafe trick in the world to get you to spend more! To make matters worse, both coffees were lukewarm, the mocha had barely any chocolate taste and both myself and friend commented on the nasty aftertaste of the milk. From my experience, and having drank my share of coffees in my lifetime, the milk was off. My friend who is a qualified barista also commented on his coffee. So far, both cups are still in the car almost full, just waiting to find a bin to dispose of them. I'm being generous rating a 2 star. Only cause the cafe looked cute

Lovely breakfasts there for the time we were working up north. They also know how to make a great cup of tea. Meal kept us going until early afternoon when we headed back for lunch.
