Absolutely beautiful marae and DoC hut. The terraced, manicured lawns and banana trees next to the river make you feel as if you are on a tropical island paradise!

It's one of the hut with local culture integrated. The facilities are great and the welcoming stage is beautiful. One unique and nice hut along the river.

We were made to feel very welcome on this Marae doc site by the Whanau living here. Everyone staying here was asked to participate in a powhiri which is a traditional Maori welcoming ceremony and leave a Koha(donation) during the powhiri(we gave food) then we had some pancakes which they made for us and tea and coffee was also offered after the ceremony which was great way in meeting everyone staying at the campsite and made to feel like we were also Whanau / family. Fantastic facilities. 4 separate burners and a oven with 4 extra gas hobs. They also have drinking water which was great after boiling water every night at other campsites. Lots of room to site down and eat your food around the campsite. You can not bring alcohol onto this camp site / Marae and there are other protocols that you need to know which they ask you not to do during the powhiri. If you do want to drink alcohol, guest are welcome to the campsite over the other side of the river. I highly recommend staying here to have this amazing experience for yourself and wake up to this beautiful scenery.
