About Waihoanga River Lodge and Retreat
The Waihōanga River Lodge and grounds has operated as a retreat centre for over twenty years. During that time, different owners have made improvements to both the grounds and land, left their own personal touch, and fostered an ever-growing community of friends and visitors who continue to return regularly.
Andy and Rhian moved here in May 2017. Supported by friends and colleagues who live both on- and off-site, they are honoured to be the current "kaitiaki" of Waihōanga and to continue the legacy of care and custodianship of this very special place. We welcome enquiries from visitors who are interested in staying at the lodge and cabins, as well as those who would like to help around the property.

We would highly recommend the facility and the team of Andy, Rhian, Georgia and Valamaya (not forgetting Bryn) make you feel so welcome, we look forward to the time we return. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Had a beautiful 4 day wānanga here. The bush setting is deceptively peaceful for being such easy access from Wellington - all you can hear is the birdsong and the cicadas. Rhian & her family were great, attentive hosts. Can't recommend this enough for your event or community group.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The retreat centre was the perfect location for our group of 15 + 5 kids and was a bit hit with everyone! The yurt was a special place to meditate together in a beautiful setting! The facilities were exceptionally clean, warm and well stocked with everything we needed for communal cooking. We had more than enough space and the beds were very comfortable with high quality linens/bedding. Andy was welcoming and the attention to detail and care taken of the buildings and property is very evident! Due to the building layout and preference of the owners that outdoor shoes are removed at the doors to the common areas (to understandably keep the carpeted areas free of mud in the winter season), I would recommend bringing a footwear option which is easy to slip on and off. We look forward to using this space again in the future!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Experienced a fabulous weekend at Waihoanga. The accommodation exceeded expectations - the kitchen/dining was well equiped, spacious and warmed by a lovely wood burner. The sitting room was a calm welcoming space (also with a lovely wood burner). The Yurt was a highlight (also warmed by wood burner) - it provided a unique space for a best ever yoga session! The sleeping (bunk) rooms were cosy and comfortable.
The retreat is nestled in amongst scenic bush and is only a short walk from the Otaki river. All very lovely.
