Beautiful location, cozy hut, fun trail and accommodating staff. We had to reschedule our booking here 4 different times because of poor weather and the staff couldn’t have been more understanding. Having a hot bath overlooking the mountains was a nice touch. Definitely recommend!

Welcome Rock is a hidden gem. The true 'backblocks' vibe, rich history, quaintly rustic Huts, and down to earth hosting and hospitality all combine to make it a very memorable place to visit. The trail itself is a marvel of blood, sweat, and beers. To ride on 27km of handmade trail, in such a remote location is a privilege, and you can't help but feel like you know something other's do not (however it likely won't be long till they do!). I suggest you experience this place as it offers so much on so many levels. Enjoy!

Great mountain bike X-country adventure! History, gold, amazing engineering & fantastic biking mixed in. We had a superb Christmas family adventure travelling from Scotland with 8yrs & 6yrs Kids and the Welcome rock trails have been a highlight. Tom and his family could not have been more helpful in accommodating changing our day due to weather, moving our gear on Christmas Day and lent us a few bits we were missing! With a bungee rope to help pull our 6yr old who’s a competent biker, we made made it round in two days. Hot Bath at the mud hut is the best I have had in 40yrs. Remarkable effort by Tom and his team to make this trial and keep NZ history living. Thankyou!

Fantastic experience. So lovely to be above the clouds on a winters day. Challenging biking but still fun and fine walking the tricky bits. Slate hut felt more like a motel than a hut. Would absolutely recommend this trip for all ages and abilities with a medium fitness level.

Incredibly special place. Book, walk the trail and stay in one of the beautifully located huts.

The Red Shed accommodation next to Blackmore Homestead is private, clean and very convenient. We stayed there after we had biked the Welcome Rock bike trail. We found the trail to be difficult and a bit dangerous for us. Although we are in our early 70's, we are fairly experienced and have technical 3 skills. The trail required better skills. It took us 6 hours and alot of pushing the bikes. The trail needs to be cleared of over- growing tussocks . But the views are superb. I just wish we had walked the trail. it is so interesting and pretty

Welcome Rock 47km bike ride was such an amazing experience! Although tough and challenging, I love the idea of doing this with my partner and also bringing a beer a chop for a nice celebration finish. Tom was so great and so kind to meet, it turned out to be such a great day and meeting great people along the bike ride and to finish at the end. Can’t wait until next year!

The trail was recommended and we did enjoy it, especially being able to stay in Mud Hut. However, the trail was probably at the upper end of my comfort zone. The grade was fine but the track's original width is now overgrown and for quite a lot of it was only about 200mm wide. I think if I had the confidence on my bike that i had 10 years ago (when i was 50) I would have been fine, but as it was I had to get off a lot on the tricky turns areas around the stream crossings especially, and my foot would disappear into the shrubbery and my bike and I would tip into the ditch. A great ride for the confident, and a good ride if you don't mind getting on and off your bike on a narrow trail. The scenery is great - though we had pretty low cloud for much of the ride. The fire wood supplied in the hut was welcome. Mud Hut is very rustic (so felt the price per night was a bit steep despite gas and fire wood being supplied) but so cool to stay in such an old and sort of original (restored) hut. The water supply to the hut did not work when we were there. the tank was full though and we could get the water from the pipe that ran to the outdoor bath. Fraid we did not try that - didn't feel like fluffing around lighting the fire underneath it.
