What a cute and interesting place to stop through. Go into the pub and play pool while listening to the free juke box. A lovely and friendly place I'd recommend to anyone passing through.

If you are driving towards Whangamomona on State Highway 43, you will see this red color signage on the left about 5 minutes before reaching Whangamomona. This indicates the entry point to the Republic of Whangamomona. If you pay attention, there is even a "border security officer" (a cow) guarding this south border. If you are driving from Whangamomona towards Stratford, you will see the signage indicating you are leaving the republic and back to NZ. ?

When the local government made changes in the boundaries of the region in 1988 without consulting the public, the townspeople protesting this situation declared themselves "Republic of Whangamomona" on November 1, 1989. Every year, the republic day celebration turned into a festival attended by people from all over the country and started to be celebrated on January 1 to take advantage of the summer climate. Whangamomona has a population of 126 according to the 2018 census, previous presidents also include a goat and a dog too.

A great place to visit. The Pub does nice food. Burgers etc. The place is very peaceful and quiet. It's alot different on Republic Day though.

The border was opened without any official checkpoints when we arrived at this Republic on Wednesday before midday. There was only one soul getting in and out of the building next to building with lot of interesting signs and icons. In short, the Republic is close from Monday to Wednesday. If you want to get your passports stamped, you'd have to be there on Thursday to Sunday! Please make sure that you have food, water, and petrol before heading toward the Republic :)

Really recommend stopping by Whangamomona while driving the Forgotten World Highway. The little town is actually a republic and has some cute historical buildings dating back to the 1800s including the iconic Whangamomona Hotel.
