About Wrights Hill Fortress

This is our story.

The Wrights Hill Fortress Restoration Society formed in 1992, with the aim of preserving and restoring the Fortress. We also took over running the Open Days from the Lions. As part of our ongoing restoration of the Fortress, we hold weekly working bees, at which general maintenance and restoration activities are done.

The Restoration Society is made up of people with many interests. Some work on restoration, some research the history, others work on the administration of the project, some help on Open Days, and some members simply support the Society through their donations and other activities.

At present we have about 50 members throughout New Zealand. The Society is always looking for new members to help on Open Days or at our working bees.

Only open for four days of the year, the fortress is a landmark that is well worth the $8 entry fee. Fire a rifle, see the communication room, read all about the brave soldiers and see replica shells and gun. Huge generator room and much more. Great visit.

Worth a visit but want comfortable shoes as you will be walking quite a few KM overall. Get there early to avoid traffic and parking issues- It is VERY tight up Wrights Hill Road! A unique look at a part of Wellington's History. Only open 4 times a year - Waitangi Day, Anzac Day, Queen's Birthday and Labour Day.

Fantastic heritage site. Passionate guide who clearly loves his work. Nice to meet a team of volunteers keeping the Fortress up to scratch. I would love to see a greater commitment from the City to upgrade its features and displays, nonetheless it was an exciting and inspiring time for my boy

Long windy drive. Great place to walk and check out Windy Wellington with a view. All tunnels are closed off, so it’s more or less a walk to the different gun points. Easy for prams and wheelchair access too.

Amazing! definitely worth the visit if you have the chance. Keep an eye out for Wetas on the walls, especially around the entrances. Once you start looking for them you might find tons! I've never seen so many in one place, its pretty special!

A unique piece of Wellingtons wartime history that is well worth a visit. It is only open to the public five days a year so make the most of those limited days. You can go inside and explore the expansive tunnel network and view displays of what went on inside the fortress. Great for young and old alike. Well worth a visit on the open days and we were treated to a display at the entrance but a group of military enthusiasts.

Interesting historical site. WWII artillery placements. Internal tunnels and rooms are only open a few days each year. Bring cash as electronic payment is not accepted.
