Helicopter to Blue Duck Station
Experience the thrill of a birds-eye view as you helicopter in to the iconic Blue Duck Station, on the Whanganui River. The scenery is sublime as you pass over pristine native forest where the awa winds its way through deep bush-clad canyons and rocky white-water rapids. Enjoy lunch at the Blue Duck Café located on a historic farming station where the Retaruke River meets the Whanganui. The Station is well known for its conservation efforts with the rare Blue Duck or Whio. After lunch you have the choice of return by helicopter, or forge a more close and personal connection with Te Awa Tupua – the only river in Aotearoa to be legally recognised as a person, as you travel back up river by Jet Boat. Admire stunning waterfalls, wild rapids and deep, bush clad gorges as you journey from untouched wilderness back through bush blocks and farmland to Cherry Grove, Taumarunui.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Our family recently canoed the Whakahoro to Pipiriki stretch of the Whanganui River with Blazing Adventures.
We are a mixed group of 9 with the youngest being 10 years and the eldest being 77 years.
I loved it! I cannot believe that I have had this incredible experience on this most beautiful river which is part of the Te Araroa Trail.
One of the highlights for me was staying at Tieke Kainga (Marae) – the hospitable ranger/host, Timbo. The welcome he prepared for us, his stories of the local history and protocols. The grounds and buildings all lovingly cared for – it is a very special place.
Blazing Adventures had everything right – the canoes, the gear, the operators, the price, their website information and videos and their “night before” accommodation.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We had a wonderful four days paddling down the Whanganui. We were 5 women, average age 62, some of whom hadn't done much canoeing before. There was a real sense of adventure and exploration paddling down the river, camping at the DOC sites and at the Marae on the last night.
Blazing Adventures were a great company to go with. The equipment, including safety equipment, was all good. Some of it was brand new. Maree listened to all our worries and taught us how to pack and load the boats. We stayed at the river rock cottage the night before, which made the morning of departure very straight forward. Thoroughly recommend this trip and this company.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Even a full five stars doesn't do justice to how good Blazing Adventures are. The friendly team really went above and beyond to make sure we had the best time out on the 5 day Whanganui river journey. We really felt like we were in safe hands, and the equipment they provided was great. Even when we accidentally tipped the canoes a few times all our gear stayed dry in the barrels provided. The accommodation the night before the trip was also a real bonus, with comfy beds and a nice warm shower before we set off. I'd definitely recommend Blazing Adventures to anyone!
