About Breakers Palmerston North
As a fair-haired teenager living in Opunake on the West Coast back in the 1970s, Mark Burt could be found surfing the many beach breaks along Taranaki’s famous Surf Highway 45 — when he wasn’t helping pour pints at the family pub, that is.
After marrying wife Penny (“the prettiest girl in high school”) , the couple moved to Hawera where they ran a very popular fish ‘n’ chip shop and later a successful catering business. But when it came to opening their first restaurant, the couple packed up their four kids and moved to Hawke’s Bay where Mark had been born in Waipawa, just up the road from the small rural town of Otane where his father had been the local town butcher before becoming a publican.
Drawing upon his love of Kiwi beach life and surfing as his inspiration, the first surf-themed Breakers restaurant was launched in 1997 inside the walls of Napier’s iconic Masonic Hotel on Marine Parade with the tagline, “Keep’n it Kiwi’.
With an emphasis on relaxed, value-for-money dining and an unpretentious menu that everyday Kiwi families could enjoy, combined with fast and friendly service, Breakers instantly proved a huge hit with locals and visitors alike.
As word of mouth grew from a ripple into a tsunami, Breakers restaurants soon began rolling out across the North Island of New Zealand like a perfect curling right-hand beach break.
And while some Breakers have come and gone to be replaced by others and the logo has undergone a few changes over the years, Breakers’ legacy and commitment to providing hearty Kiwi tucker in a relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere continues to this day.
Breakers Restaurants … Keep’n It Kiwi for more than 20 years!

β β β β β Had an awesome meal tonight and the waitress was very friendly. Didn't have to wait long for the meal to come out. Will be going again.

β β β β β Overall service was sweet and food was good but when you pay $35 for a scotch fillet and chips you should not have to pay an extra $5 for a gravy or sauce.i can't get over this.especially when you get gravy, cheese sauce and an apple sauce with a $24 roast pork.for this fact I leave 1 star

β β β β β Environment here is great and the kids can be kept busy with a a small play area, and I'm always a damn of a pool table or 2... Unfortunately the food isn't great, a bit bland but the large portions makes up for that, even the kids have massive portions.

β β β β β So enjoy going for a meal at breakers. Staff are friendly and service great, food is delicious and not overpriced. As a shift worker it's nice to be able to eat out get a decent meal not takeout stuff at any hour of afternoon not have to wait till a certain time for kitchen to open like most restaurants

β β β β β Upon entering Breakers on a Sunday evening with no reservation, as we were not planning on being in Palmerston North, we were met with the friendliest waitress with the hugest smile. She had no hesitation in explaining the procedure around eating at Breakers, the specials board, and we could sit wherever we wanted. Ordering was a breeze, press the button at the table and hey presto a waitress appears. The below photos are the fish and chips, you even got to choose battered or crumbed fish and the mussels in a garlic sauce. As dinner was served the sun was setting in the hills and causing a glare, there was no hesitation in asking if I wanted the blind lowered. Top service, but only a four star due to the amount of grit left in my mussels. Overall a great experience. We will definitely be back

β β β β β Good experience, loved how they have a call button to push when you are ready to order. Meals were a generous size and tasted good. Coffee machine wasn't working and they didn't have the flavor pulp for the frappe I ordered. Not a fan of the chopping board style serveware instead of a plate, kept cutting through the paper liner and food flung across table trying to cut the ribs as all served as one. Didn't get to try dessert as took to long to arrive after main, so we cancelled them off our order.

β β β β β Probably the worst meal we have ever had. Dry chicken, soggy fish and chips, bugs in the salad, warm beer ( the second round the waitress asked if we would like her to look in the chiller for some cold drinks???) service was completely absent, you needed to push a button? I get that this is a pack ββem in and get ββem out type venue, so the staff are only working with what they have and are trained to do, but the prices are consistent with a restaurant that should be doing the basics properly, which this place clearly canβt. On a positive note, the young waitstaff are really friendly, outgoing and clearly trying to make the most of a poorly managed restaurant.
