★ ★ ★ ★ ★ bring back the old pub! food extremely over priced. quality of food doesn't match the price. limited options. Toilets are old and filthy. The atmosphere has disappeared and so has my enthusiasm to go there.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Lovely accommodation, friendly staff, restaurant food is delicious. So nice and affordable compared to wanaka. But the free wifi has signal but basically no internet. Not sure if that's a hotel or hawea issue to be fair. Cell signal isn't awesome in town either. Have to just spend time at the lake.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We called in after a swim at Scotts beach. We enjoyed a pizza and some drinks. The pub has a warm open fire and a rural nz pub feel to it. The pub is a tad outdated but we didn't care. Good food and even better views!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ATTENTION!!!!
Giving this one star only because of how lovely and honest the receptionist was and we couldn’t stress that enough , a genuine employee who must often find herself in awkward positions due to her employers standards. We felt bad for this lovely woman who it seems has had to deal with this issue often and deserves far better.
However read on
We booked our one night stay through booking.com and we’re impressed by the price and photographs that advertised a stay in the “lodge” accomodation at the Hawea hotel. ( photos appear to be very cleverly taken If not staged )
Upon arrival we were extremely surprised and disappointed to find that we had been insanely lead astray by this advertisement for what turned out to be a $70 HOSTEL room.(average price of a hostel in the hawea/Wanaka area is $28-$30 FYI)
The use of the word LODGE is not true to the very poor conditions and cleanliness of what is labeled as a hostel on sight , the rooms were sub-par to say the least and in serious need of some attention from a hygiene point of view.
The grounds were overgrown with a large amount of rubbish and discarded furniture right outside the windows that had been frosted to hide this unsightly view. It’s a shame that this ruined what is truly a beautiful view.
The shared bathroom facilities resembled public toilets, were dirty, foul smelling, wet and scary to say the least ,even the local council in the area maintains their facilities with more care.
We are aware due to local knowledge that the owner is never on sight and it sounds like the attitude about the standards of their facility matches what it looks like on the ground.
Admittedly we trusted what we were sold without viewing reviews that fall in line with this one, they date back far enough it is shocking that barely any action has been taken on the unsatisfactory conditions of this “LODGE” ……. Hostel.
Even as a hostel this place needs some serious care and attention, advertisement needs to be realistic and honest and staff need to be valued far more than they currently seem to be.
SERIOUSLY DISAPPOINTING.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We ordered 2 kids menu fish and chips and a Hawea burger (beef) to take away. For $50 I was expecting something special. Very disappointing indeed. Kids meals were tiny and my burger looked like something McDonalds had slapped together. Obviously it’s gone downhill recently as it used to be great food here.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Toilet block outside if in 'double room with shared toilet'. Didn't tell us it was part of the hostel; described it as 'The Lodge' which we thought was just a name for a building; were astounded when we discovered we had to go outside to the toilet in the middle of the night. Thank goodness it didn't rain at night while we were there. The path was totally uncovered. We've never had an outside toilet before when we've paid that much for a room. This is unacceptable.
Also, one of the receptionists was quite rude when we asked about dinner. We've never been treated as rudely as that in all our travels. Someone should set up in competition - they'd do well as this place is overpriced.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We spent 4 days here at Hawea hotel. Such beautiful views from our room right on the lake a little expensive in the restaurant but such amazing food and service , the bar is gorgeous lovely outdoor area and live music every Sunday. Beautiful little township amazing people and awesome walks by the lake. Everything you need and only 15 minutes to Wanaka.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Unfortunately very disappointed. I came there often to eat during holidays 2 years ago while camping and it was better. I don't know if its a new owner but it is now feel different. It's used to be very warm atmosphere, kind of real kiwi pub but with a cozy side, with a fireplace in the middle. Now it is all gone and its feel more cold. Well, the view its still the same but unfortunately I will not go back again.
