About Kaniwhaniwha Campsite (via Kaniwhaniwha Reserve carpark)
Native species are fighting for survival from predation by rats, stoats and possums. Without protection, we risk losing New Zealand’s unique natural heritage and biodiversity.
Alongside our partners, we use 1080, large-scale trapping and other methods to protect native birds, bats, frogs, lizards, giant land snails and forests. We do this work at important conservation sites across the country to help them recover.
1080 is the most effective tool to control introduced predators over large areas and rough terrain. Decades of research shows it protects vulnerable wildlife and forests and helps populations to grow.
The programme is a critical part of the Predator Free 2050 movement. It is protecting the remaining populations of native species while other tools are being developed to eradicate possums, rats and stoats.
To help achieve this, we are consulting and partnering with hapΕ«, iwi, communities, landowners and other organisations involved in conservation.

β β β β β This is a great campsite!
It is a large open space surrounded by trees and open portion of rolling farmland with plenty of room for campers/hikers to spread out and set up.
Three long-drops available is a nice touch for those that donβt appreciate a squat in bush.
There are rubbish bins set up around the edges of the campsite and by the long-drops.
There is a large fire pit for your cooking and warming pleasure.
The Kaniwhaniwha Stream running right next to the campsite provides a water source for drinking and cooking (needs to be boiled for 3mins!) and great refresher after a good walk/hike. Iβve found a 5-10min soak removes muscle tension and even headaches!
The Limestone Caves are a nearby and even though itβs a short trip through them itβs worth the experience.
I highly recommend this campsite. You can take your kids there or escape on your own or with friends.
