I've been using taxis from Christchurch airport to work in Middleton for the last 2 years now. Last monday I used Mainland for the first time. I was charged $50 for a trip I usually pay $40. This is highway robbery.

Complicated metering system and hidden add-on costs meant a trip from Christchurch airport to Woolston was 110% more than Uber, a way higher price difference than I ever would have expected. Uber quoted $42.40, the mainland taxi cab cost me $89.20. I thought it would likely be $10-$15 more than Uber, which I would have considered fair enough given that taxis run a different business model, but $46 more seems excessive.

Very poor value. Super expensive rates, $50 for a ride that’s $20 on Uber. Added $10 of extra charges at the end while Ha ring displayed only $5 the entire ride, then pressed the button and doubled it at drop off. Overall sneaky way of handling it and very disappointed. However, lesson learned and will stick with Uber now.

We arrived late in Christchurch on Christmas Day (about 9.30pm). My wife went outside to the waiting taxis and asked the first taxi (a Mainland Taxi), how much it would be for an 8km trip into the suburbs. The driver was rude and dismissive and told her that we would just have to climb into the taxi and "find out" from the meter. We were eventually helped by a far more pleasant and friendly driver (from the Blue Taxi Company) who gave us a price which we were happy to pay. I travel to Christchuruch on business and I will never use a Mainland Taxi - like the rude driver kept telling me - "it is your choice not to use my taxi (Mainland)"... Yes, it is...

Do NOT use... First taxi in line mainland, read about experience but can confirm its poor. Driver pulled face mask down when driving, start fee airport 6.50 and charged 13.00 when stopped on Meter. I asked him for a receipt on fair types didn't want to provide a copy just eftpos receipt. Asked again but the driver got aggitated and blunt.

Didn't tell me until we were at my destination that he couldn't take my eftpos card. Said he had expected me to have a credit card (not his place to assume such a thing). Took me to an ATM so I could get cash out; I requested a GST receipt for business purposes, was given a manual credit card slip with no Mainland Taxi details, no GST number, and the incorrect amount listed. So now I have to chase up their Head Office on Monday to get it fixed so my company will actually reimburse me.

The fee was normal BUT got told the eftpos machine was broken so the driver tried to write down the credit card numbers on paper. He didn't say we can't use card when we got into the car, only after we got to the destination. Obviously a scam, be careful!! Also tried to take pictures of the taxi registration details but the driver got mad and started yelling “you annoy me, I’ll call the police”. Disgusting.

Couldn't wait to exit the cab. Stank terribly. Not sure if it was smoke (the driver Duran was a smoker) or a terrible scent thing (couldn't see any scent thingie) but made me cringe and in fact exited a little early to walk the last 50m. Nice enough driver. Bit strange as there was a $3 fee on the meter at the beginning at the airport, and at the end they added a $10 surcharge which is probably the airport fee. Think this is fairly standard.
