About Mr Go's

About

The Story

Mr Ah Go was an 1800's Chinese market gardener on Tasman Street, Mount Cook, just up the road from our restaurant today. Through Ah's gardens ran a stream, providing access to water - an integral part of his livelihood to grow groups. In 1890, under pressure to source land for western settlers, local council proposed seizing ah's land for residential development, culverting the stream to provide more space. Instead, Ah proposed to divert the stream and move his gardening to one-side of the land where the stream would run allowing Western settlers to occupy the other half, with the two then to be living side-by-side. Council disagreed, forcing ah from his gardens for a Mere £3  Compensation. Within two years, ah's gardens and the now culverted stream were built upon and solely occupied by western settlers.

It is not known what then happened to Mr go and his family.

Mr Go's is a nod to Ah himself, but moreover all he wanted – Western settlers and Chinese market gardeners thriving side by side. Mr go's takes his name from the store, not the man. We're neither a chinese restaurant nor a western one at that - we're a harmonious in-between.

This is Mr Go's - this is not Mr go.

The place was pumping and the food was awesome. The beer and wine selection is good. The cocktails just kept flying out of the bar. But the highlight were the sensational staff!!! They worked flat out the whole evening, and seamlessly. There is a very lucky owner somewhere this crew are really good.

We had dinner here during Queen’s Birthday weekend and it was by far the best place we ate at during our stay in Wellington. We walked in just before 5pm and were told we would have to have the table cleared for a booking at 6 which was fine, and the food came out so quickly that we didn’t have to worry about rushing our stay. We couldn’t fault the service, every staff member we dealt with was friendly and professional. The food was delicious. We will definitely be back!

Great ambiance and friendly, attentive staff. I had the cream cheese wontons served with a tangy ginger and garlic based dipping sauce and a fish bao which was flavoursome, saucy in a milky soft bun.

The cream cheese wontons are my favourite thing on the menu, they come with a ginger dipping sauce that cuts through the creaminess. And the bao buns, well look at them. Such good value for money

Great place to discover new dishes from their monthly specials exploring a different city's/country's Starter, main and/or dessert. Worth mentioning... Their BAO Buns are a MUST!
