About Penthouse Cinema & Cafe

OUR STORY

THE PENTHOUSE, ORIGINALLY KNOWN AS THE VOGUE THEATRE, WAS CONSTRUCTED FOR THE RANISH FAMILY AND OPENED ON 15 JUNE 1939.

Vogue Theatre – Opening Night 1939

The Ranish family ran the theatre until around 1951 when it was taken over by the Vogue Company Limited, a company formed by former National Film Unit and wartime cameraman, Stan Weymss. Stan then joined up with Noel Peach to form Peach Weymss Productions Limited.

Turning the Vogue into a studio, the company started making television commercials. In later years, the unused space was leased out to a number of small business people.

The building came under new ownership in 1975 when Merv and Carol Kisby bought the building, re-named it the Penthouse Cinema and a new era began.

Merv Kisby had been in the film exhibition industry since 1949 and was responsible for holding the Wellington Film Society’s annual international festival from 1971 to 1984 at the Paramount Theatre.

Merv and Carol’s daughter, Sandra, was involved in the business from day one. Her interests, however, developed into that of a more professional nature when she entered into partnership with her parents in 1991. After Merv passed away in August 1994, Sandra took a leading role in the business and has continued to develop the business as her father would have wished.

In November 1994, a cafΓ© was opened in the centre of the building just off the foyer.

A second cinema was opened in June 1995. This is located at the rear of the building, in an area that had been closed off since 1975.

The original cinema, located upstairs, has been refurbished to include new seats, plush wall curtains and a new air conditioning system. All of the refurbishments have been carried out while preserving the original character of the cinema.

The Vogue Suite, a luxurious 30-seater lounge cinema and function space opened in 2001.

In December 2005, a fourth screen opened, featuring 168 luxurious armchair seats with legroom to spare, an impressive wall to wall screen and state of the art sound system. As part of the development of the new screen, a large carparking area has also been created right next door to the cinema.

All the developments that have been taken place at the Penthouse Cinema in recent years have been done with the original art deco style of the cinema in mind. The cinema proudly retains its old-fashioned charm and elegance while offering a first class cinematic experience to moviegoers.

Love the movies. It is always busy. The icecreams are sizeable and do not come in plastic bags like some theatres well done. There is a good menu and plenty to choose from the cabinet.

We had a fantastic time in the cinema! Bought the groupon deal of a movie and dinner, the dinner was excellent and the staff were very kind and accommodating. We also got an ice cream voucher included with the dinner ?. I would recommend this place to everyone

Very cosy, no complaints. Cabinet food looks beautiful and with extremely compelling prices, very appreciated. Screens are pretty small relative to the size of the cinema, if you're short sighted you might want to choose a seat nearer the middle or front.

Every few months I forget why I don't like this cinema and go back only to be frustrated all over again! The seats are pretty uncomfortable but the biggest issue by far is that they sell big plastic foil bags of popcorn. This means you get to enjoy the rustling of plastic foil throughout the entire movie which completely ruins the experience. At the very least, if they cared about the customer experience, they would decant the bags into bowls but really any self respecting cinema should serve fresh popcorn. Go if you like: surround sound plastic effects Avoid if you like: the movie-going experience

Excellent theatre Lovely, helpful, friendly staff. Meals are normally great. BUT AVOID THE CURRENT DISH OF THE DAY AT ALL COSTS. See picture attached It is a totally bizarre excuse for a meal. Three or four very thin slices of beetroot eight or so green leaves A very small sprinkling of nut pieces A tiny amount of white yoghurt like sauce.....And a plate. I have a 15YO grandson who could have eaten the whole meal in ten to fifteen seconds........ James Bond was excellent though!!!!

Really disappointed with my experience yesterday. Good ambiance but the food was terrible. Didn't expect that at all. Covered in oil/butter. I couldn't even finish my meal. How complicated cheese burger and chicken burger be? Movie was great. Must watch Dune.

Phone booked tickets this morning, carefully responding to every one of their requirements. Phone message said they'd get back, only if any problems. The problem was, we arrived in good time to uplift the tickets, only to be told there was no booking! I showed them a record of the phone call. 8:45am. "Oh, we've been busy this afternoon", was the retort. "These are the only tickets we have left". Problem paying individually for our two tickets. Separate transaction required to purchase a coffee. On a positive note, the coffee was great! Someone must have deleted the phone booking. Staff didn't handle it well. I usually enjoy my visits to this cinema. You can do better than this, Penthouse.

I really like this Cinema I used go and see a lot of movies here when I lived in Brooklyn, they also have a really good awesome cafe that has a liquor license so you can have a drink when see your movie. But getting back to the cafe. They have a really good selection of food and have a great selection of vegetarian and vegan options. Their big vegetarian breakfast option is really nice. Prices are really good. I highly recommend going in their for a meal and catch a movie .
