History

Serving the people since 1996

In 1992 the top of Cuba Street wasn’t exactly a hotspot for a new venue; number 234 was a half-way house for the Mount Crawford Prison and the foot traffic was a mix of prostitutes and delinquents. When Roger Young decided to open a Mexican Cafe called Little Gringo’s people told him he was crazy. Proving them all wrong, he closed a couple of hours into opening day after running out of food.  Four years later The Southern Cross Tavern bought the concept and after failing to sublease his now empty venue, Roger decided to stay put and open a cafe. Referencing a fourth form social studies project on the Cuban Revolution, Roger and his new business partner Potti set about transforming the space into an all day venue adorned with memorabilia and imagery of 1950’s Cuba.

In 1997 the business had outgrown its single roomed venue so part of the car park outback was turned into a covered smoking section cementing Fidel’s reputation as an alternative hang out. Another space was created in 1999 knocking down a wall into the old Supercuts Hair Salon next door.  A proper sized kitchen came next, taking over the adjoining apartment and later in 2003 more car parks were converted into the front courtyard. Fast forward to 2020 and the kitchen has grown again, there’s an outside street stall with a second coffee machine and a staff of 40 serving Cuban coffee and good, honest food, including some old favourites from the original menu. Viva Fidel’s!

It's ok. We had rhe baked eggs, they were pretty overcooked although good in flavour. Coffee was spot on. Service a bit cold, we closed a back door going to the garden, as the place was freezing cold and windy.

Food was awesome and atmosphere very chilled. Staff were friendly. Definitely suited to the younger 'cool' crowd. Only negative was the table situated on the footpath allowed smokers and was next to our table in the rear garden space.

Very cool cafe! Atmosphere is really enjoyable and the coffee is some of the best I’ve had. I normally have a little milk in my coffee, but I didn’t even want to add milk to the coffee because it was so delicious. We also tried the breakfast burrito and the chicken and waffles, both which were delicious. The staff here was really friendly as well. Overall it’s just an awesome little cafe with great coffee and food. What more could you want?

I went here for brunch after ages and nothing had changed (in the nicest way possible) - delicious food and coffee, friendly staff, cosy, hippy and colourful place. I tried the smashed avo and it was really good. A big thumbs-up to food, service and place.

Breakfast was divine. My son and I had never been here for breakfast, and by the end we were quite full.

We visited this cafe for brunch, on our trip to Wellington. This place was extraordinary!! The samosa was so light n yet crispy on the outside bringing out all the beautiful flavours , Fidel’s feast was delicious n perfect for brunch and not to forget , the Cuban burrito was a massive hit !! Loved every bit of food which was on the table. Also to mention, the service was really good n pretty fast even though the place was crowded. Definitely looking forward to our next visit.

OMG THIS PLACE IS HEAVENLY! Love the vibe, love the food, love the attitudes! My favourite Cafe in Wellington ? Make a booking because it gets popular! The chicken on waffles are AMAZE-BALLS! I can't praise the cashews that come with the chicken enough!! Had drinks, the big breakfast, breakfast burrito, and baked Spanish eggs!
