Awesome outing with bike hire available on site on the Kaitoke side. Great place for a quick casual ride and it's fun going through the 800 metre long tunnel at the summit. Taking a torch/light is really useful. The return to Cross creek is a decent ride even if you are pretty bike fit and it's not a technical challenge.

Did this today Maymorn Station to Featherston Station and caught train back to Maymorn. A fantastic ride... Maymorn starts steep but is rideable for the most part. Kaitoke to Summit is easy and plenty to see and read about, Summit to Cross Creek is all steep downhill...no pedalling required. The tunnels and the bridge at Siberia are worth the ride alone. Cross Creek to the Cross Creek carpark is a lot of fun on a skinny track and the gravel road from the carpark to Western Lake Rd is easy and fun. But...then the ride becomes AWFUL. The so call cycle track alongside Western Lake Rd is severely rutted and very rough. The bike bounced around and pounded my backside to such an extent that I gave up and rode on the road itself. This part of the ride is lengthy, boring and the prevailing wind fights you. By all means I recommend this fantastic ride but suggest you have someone pick you up from the Cross Creek carpark. GWRC or the local district council (whoever is responsible) should be ashamed of the Western Lake cycle track. It needs urgent rebuilding with a quality asphalt or concrete surface. Metlink's Wairarapa train staff were very helpful transporting my wife, I and our bikes back to Maymorn. Top marks Metlink.

Love this walk, but it is 20km return. Great historic trail with the story told at intervals along the way. Great place to take a picnic also good for biking

The e-scooters and electric unicycles ate the track up. Get your EUC or scooter from Roll.nz

Great trail and piece of history. Easy grade cycle up from Kaitoke on a well maintained and wide track. Great for a day out with the family, especially on bikes. The tunnel at the summit is the highlight. Lots of stops for picnics at various places. Never seen it crowded. Highly recommend.

Highly recommend this trail for biking or walking. Beautiful views and bush/ creeks/small waterfalls. Well maintained track and toilet facilities. Great history information provided with photos. Old summit railway station is still there. Fabulous new swing bridge built this year.

Lovely walk, I went during the week, the track is marked by km, I walked to the 4km mark and turned back. Lots of places to stop for a picnic, sheltered, and flat. Excellent for biking, running and walking. Can follow different walks along the way. Dont worry about the sound of guns, there's a shooting range nearby.
