★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We did Nature Walk with our 5 year old daughter. The trail is easy and leads through the forest. You can reach the river at the bridge. At the beginning of the trail there is a beautiful place with information about the region. Good place for a picnic. We did it in 2 hours but we did a lot of stops for watching the nature itself.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Stunning mountainous national park. Native beach forest & rivers, great place to go on or off track when I'm missing Fiordland. Be sure to know the weather forecast and conditions, weather can be quite changeable. If off marked track (usually me) be cautious of holes through jumbled broken boulders with only thin covering. Dress for the conditions & tell someone where you are going and reporting time coming out (even just day walks), especially when exploring. Off track expect river crossings.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Incredible Routeburn Track! I can’t describe how amazing this walk was! We met Kea bird, and heard the singing of South Island Robin. Lots of fun and memorable experience ?

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This a wonderful region, and after hearing so much about the Routeburn Track from almost every guide and driver we’ve encountered on our stay, my son and I decided to head up to Glenorchy, and then walk the start of the track for 30 mins in and back out again. Fortunately, there’s a tailor made track just for this, called the Nature Walk. Anyway, it’s pretty easy walking, takes you to a long swing bridge, and then back through the forest. There are many well placed signposts along the way that help to explain the forest ecosystem. The forest trees, the mosses, and the mountain and hillside views are truly spectacular, and it certainly feels like your are finally at the base of the mountains that you’ve previously only seen from afar. Plenty of car parking, big route maps, advice, and lots of clean toilets.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Can’t recommend this place enough! All you need is a pair of sneakers and everyone should be able to enjoy this beautiful 1 hour loop. Not physically demanding unless to want to go further for the 2-6 hours treks.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Fantastic place for an explore. Or do the three day walk way. Some of the most amazing scenes anywhere in the world.
Great walking track. Super clean and easy to walk. Great stops. Well worth talking the time to do.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Nice walk in the forest. This first part is all in the forest, there is some nice view of the nearby river, but this is it. No view of mountains or anything else. A bit boring after a while... You start to get some view of the valley when you are almost at the Routeburn Flats Hut.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Over 2 weeks we did day day walks of most of Southland's great walks (Routeburn, Kepler, MIlford) and the one day return we did from the Routeburn Car Park to Routeburn Flats was the best of the lot.
The drive here is half the thrill - fantastic scenery along the lake to Glenorchy, then 2 river crossings, and finally, the increasingly narrow gravel track to the carpark.
But don't leave it too late, by 10.30 parking here was gone and we had to park along the side of the road.
There are good facilities and great maps at the start, and the walk begins with a spectacular suspension bridge.
The Nature Walk is pleasant, and if you only have an hour, then do this, but the best scenery begins well beyond where this walk turns for the loop back to the bridge. (And, a tip, if tired, do NOT take the lower section of the nature walk on the way back - it's not that interesting but finished with a steep climb).
The walk is not that steep, and doesn't involve a lot of elevation if you turn around at Routeburn Flats - the serious climb begins at the turnoff to the Falls (which is an essential 5 minute diversion from the track).
There is a single drop toilet along the way, then proper picnic tables and faclities at Routeburn Flats, overlooking a stunning meadow, with valley views in 2 different directions.
The track is very well maintained and there's wonderful views of the river, trees and occasionally elevated views back down the valley.
Simply the best one day walk in Southland, so good, we've vowed to come back and do it again, and try to make the Falls next time.
Stock up on food and water and petrol at Glenorchy, as there is nothing between here and the car park.
